Clos Maggiore (33 King Street, London, WC2E 8JD)

Sold on the courtyard setting and renowned service. We requested a table in the courtyard on booking but were told that this could not be guaranteed. A little disappointed, we arrived and were ushered to a table in the outer dining room, however, within 15 minutes and a little pouting on my part they had cleared a table, moved our drinks and set us up in a perfect corner seat, lots of apologies and very accommodating staff. Faultless from here on in – food sublime, seabass like no other! Great extensive wine list and helpful sommelier. Staff subtle but attentive. Have been back twice since, each visit played out exactly as first in terms of seating, changing tables etc but if you are prepared to faff at the start the setting and food are perfect. Not at all too pricey for the quality of the experience either.

L'Oranger (5 St James's Street, London, SW1A 1EF)

We decided to visit L’Oranger based on a friend’s recommendation. The service was absolutely fabulous throughout, fussy French food but expertly cooked and very accessible for even my untrained palate, enjoyed every mouthful. Particularly enjoyed the chicken and truffle main with the winter vegetables. The Sommelier talked us through the wines and the head of staff came over to chatter but nothing too overbearing or intimidating. Everything about this restaurant was subtle and intimate with warm decoration, wood paneling and lots of beautiful flowers. The general clientele appeared to be regulars as they seemed on very familiar terms with the staff but that only added to the relaxed atmosphere. I would most certainly recommend for a quiet evening out, absolutely exquisite food and a truly personal approach to each couple. One note, we were by far the youngest diners by at least 10 years!

Salt Yard (54 Goodge Street, London, W1T 4NA)

Last minute dash to find a restaurant on a Friday night and we stumbled across this delightful little Tapas place; healthy portion sizes at a reasonale price, decent selection – there is one dish in particular that I would go back for, sausage in this fabulous sauce. Staff were a little non responsive and careless with the dishes and the venue itself is rather cramped but the food certainly went a long way in making up for it!

Automat (33 Dover Street, London, W1S 4NF)

Editor's pick

This is my brunch venue of choice if I am in the area – great little diner. American/nautical feel with a light and airy conservatory at the rear of the restaurant, high bar stools and black and white tiled floors. Good menu for brunch, though they reduced the portion sizes of late (hasn't everywhere?!), with traditional pancakes and eggs ‘any way’ as well as the usual burgers and ‘fries’. My other half often orders his take away supper from Automat when working late and he assures me that the food is always well put together and satisfying. Not too pricey, enjoyable comfort food in a lovely environment. Try and get seating at the back of the restaurant and if you do visit the bathroom – the doors are rather narrow so leave your handbag at the table… Oh and you must try one of their chocolate milkshakes, such a sinful treat!

Chino Latino at the Riverbank Park Plaza Hotel (Riverbank Park Plaza Hotel, 18 Albert Embankment, London, SE1 7TJ)

Divine food and even better cocktails, lots of attention to detail. The restaurant was completely dead on a Friday night though, not more than 1/3 full despite being below a hotel – but the service was good and the food more than made up for it. Well designed with warm lighting and intimate bar area despite the floor space. Would do far better if more centrally located but I will be returning.

Restaurant Critic

Gaucho Piccadilly (25 Swallow Street, London, W1B 4QR)

Editor's pick

I have dined here on numerous occasions and as with all the branches (also visited the O2 and City restaurants) the quality of the food is fabulous for the price and the atmosphere is exciting; with all that cow hide it is hard not to get a little carried away with the South American vibe! The upper floor dining room is, in my opinion, more relaxed but the lighting in the entire restaurant is purposely kept very low and often it can often get quite noisy so much so that it is hard to hear ones own party. The lower floor is far more sedate and intimate and the bar on the ground floor is similarly dimly lit. A good stable choice for a fun evening out.
