The Cinnamon Club (The Old Westminster Library, 30-32 Great Smith Street, London, SW1P 3BU)

After hearning so many good things about this place I took a bunch of business partners ther for dinner last night and had one of the worst dining experiences ever. Don't get me wrong, the food is pretty good – not exactly the Nobu of Indian food as I was led to expect but pretty interesting slightly leftfield Indian fare. What was bad, nay appalling was the service. We waited about 30 minutes for menus. 45 minutes to get a drink. An hour to order. Arrived at 7:30 and left at nearly 11:00pm. The waiter was absolutely clueless, brought wine to the table, I tasted, said OK – filled my glass then walked away with the bottle putting it in an ice bucket 5 yards away without offering anyone else a glass. We asked for bread / nans etc 5 times until we eventually got some. Sat looking at our finished plates for a good half an hour. The Manager span me the old line of ‘oh we are really busy tonight’ – like I care! – at £90 a head I was spending you should employ more staff. Rotten experience, avoid it like the plague – go to Sartaj in 7 Dials in Covent Garden, save yourself a bucket and wrap yourself in one of their Duvet sized Nan breads whislt guzzling lashings of ice cold Cobra. Saving that just get a take-away or go to your local – at least you know what you are getting!

St John (26 St John Street, London, EC1M 4AY)

Editor's pick

Fergus Henderson truly is one of the Gods of what I consider to be the Good Food renaissance along with Tony Bourdain, Anthony Demetre et al. As someone that was brought up on the cheaper offal ‘off’ cuts of meat I find it staggering that many people today refuse to go near them. St. John's was for me a trip down memory lane spliced with a toe dip into some slightly more left field offerings. What you can be assured of at St. John's is complete honesty. Food that is well thought out and lovingly prepared. Cured Sea Trout, Cucumber & Dill, Smoked Pork Chop with Spring Greens and the best ever Welsh Rarebit – Oh yes! Washed down with a very well priced Cotes De Provence. Highly reccomended. One of my favourite ever restaurants.

Le Relais de Venise (5 Throgmorton Street, London, EC2N 2AD)

French Bistro simplicity at its best. Fixed Menu – Salad – Steak avec Frites – cooked perfectly with their own secret recipe sauce, fantastic Frites washed down with a reassuringly expensive bottle of red wine. I honestly could eat lunch there everyday if not for the fear of turning into Monsieur Creosote. Highly recommended for lovers of good French cuisine and a refreshing alternative to over priced City ponce. If only British pubs could get a basic meal like this so right.
