Artillery Tower (Firestone Bay, Durnford Street, Plymouth, Devon PL1 3QR) An excellent meal in this Michelin recommended (2010) restaurant in the centre of Plymouth (close to Royal William Yard). Excellent range of truly locally sourced ingredients with sensible portion sizes and seasonal dishes. There seem to be no other comparable restaurants in Plymouth and this little known gem should recieve a wider following. We've now been twice (3 years apart!) and as a returning local now living in the south east it is refreshing to find high quality food in a city not renowned for its culinary experiences. A beautiful building with views out to the Sound if you sit next to the windows. The carpet could do with replacing but if you're willing to overlook a bit of faded axminster the food more than makes up for it. We had excellent starters (Mushroom with Goats cheese & herb crumb, and Salcombe crab and avacado salad) followed by Devon lamb and rounded off with a ‘chocolate nemesis’ and crispy apple tart. Excellent and helpful service (friendly & low key, certainly not overbearing) and the Chef made a point of coming round all the tables at the end of the meal for a chat.
