Chiswell Street Dining Rooms (56 Chiswell Street, London, EC1Y 4SA)

We visited during the “soft launch” as a party of 6 and, having visited the Botanist before, came with expectations that were largely met. Housed in an old pub, it is more dining room than gastropub with a lovely bar area for drinks. Service was very attentive, but this was to be expected as the staff numbered customers almost 1 to 1 and had clearly been told to try and impress during the soft launch phase (we were bizarrely asked if we were enjoying the service during the meal!). The food has a traditional Britain meets bistro France feel and overall whilst very good there were mixed reactions to some of the dishes. The starters of scallops, snail & bacon pie, smoked eel and cheesy tart were all excellent, but the mains of lamb and steak didn't meet expectations (steak was well cooked but we've had better quality at the Rivington and Smihtfields nearby for less; lamb was billed as a cassoulet but came with spring greens and was lacking in flavour) and whilst I was happy with my dover sole, I could imagine others being less satisfied with a small piece of well-cooked fish being served with a tiny portion of broccoli on the side . With 50% off food, we thought the food was very good value but weren't sure we'd be as happy without the deal. I'll be popping back for a drink once it opens but expect I'll head to other places nearby for better value cooking.

Bocca di Lupo (12 Archer Street, London, W1D 7BB)

First impressions of the restaurant (lovely decor, buzzy atmosphere) were great and service was very good (other than one overfamiliar American waitress) but we were really disappointed with the food and overall experience. We shared a range of starters which were all average and in a couple of cases on the border of being unpleasant (eg fried artichoke and grilled squid both had the taste of burnt butter, and the squid was undercooked in parts). Mains were an improvement (eg squid ink risotto was rich and the tagliatelle sound) but lacked any wow. We felt that most of the dishes were overpriced given the quality of the ingredients and cooking. Care was lacking as well – my partner found a small stone in his tagliatelle sauce and my dinner plate had not been wiped properly and had smudges that made it look like it was ridged. Yuck. Dessert was no better – a sandwich of icecream came in a toasted (again slightly burnt) brioche bun. It was like an increcream burger and did not work (although the icecream was very nice). My partner was also cross when he saw a little cake and candle being given to another table but not to ours, even though he had specifically asked for them to do something as it was my birthday. Given all the good reviews, I wondered if it was just us, but the table next to us also complained about their food being undercooked. When we're next looking for a nice Italian meal, we'll be going back to L'Anima which in comparison has superb decor, attentive but not overbearing service and divine food (including the best olives of anywhere I've been in London – BDL had similar ones, but they were smaller and spoiled by being served in the same dish as some more bitter olives that completely changed and ruined the taste).

Skylon Restaurant (Royal Festival Hall, Belvedere Road, London, SE1 8XX)

We dined here on a Saturday evening pre-theatre with the evening standard 3 courses for £20 inc a glass of wine deal and were very impressed. Service was excellent and each of the 3 courses very good. Whilst some dishes were a bit average (eg the fois gras came with an odd Indian flavoured chutney, and the lavender creme brulee was a bit gloopy and lacking real vanilla) some were excellent (my partner loved the duck leg on lentils, and my gravad lax to start was very tasty). We'll definitely consider coming back pre- or post- theatre.

Terroirs (5 William Street, London, WC2N 4DW)

Very disappointing given the glowing reviews. We went for a very quick pre-theatre meal, having only some bread & tapenade to start, a plat du jour each and a pot of wine (500ml). The service was brisk and friendly enough, the wine pleasant and reasonable value and the tapenade a sign that the meal to come would be good. Unfortunately, my sea bream was almost inedible: it came over-fried and on a bed of olive oil with a small handful of red peppers, fresh anchovies, capers and parsley. No sides were available and at £14 it was also overpriced. When I mentioned to the waitress that my meal was far too oily to be enjoyable she nodded and walked off (although the manager did approach us as we were leaving as he had heard we had not enjoyed the meal). My partner's pork was adequate but nothing to rave about. This place might be nice for a nibble and a glass of wine but we won't be going back.
