Have you got a budget?

Hakkasan Mayfair certainly has your wow factor and opened up just before christmas.

Another obvious suggestion would be Heston Blumenthal's new restaurant Dinner in Mandarin Oriental. Doesnt open until Jan 31st and is fully booked for a couple of months but would be worth the wait.

Newly opened Savoy Grill, now under Gordon Ramsays control, serves excellent food and has excellent service and you can tie the trip in with a drink in the American Bar. More

Jojo – do you need to be in any particular area of London?

I can see why you are having trouble as most private rooms are isolated from the main restaurant.

I can think of two places that may be suitable:

Cecconi's , just off Bond Street, is always a good bet as they have a kind of side room off the main dining room that can act as a private room but you still get the buzz / view of the main restaurant. They also do a good set menu. Lovely Italian food with great service – Mayfair wow factor but still buzzy place. Giacomo is the general manager there and he is good person to speak to about your requirments.

Pizza East in Shoreditch has a cool set up for big group of people. They have a kind of private booth but, again, it is in the main restaurant so you get all the buzz and atmosphere of the same place but at the same time you are slightly set aside from everyone else. For £50-£60 a head you can eat like kings at Pizza East and there is the concrete bar downstairs which is good for a drink after. Speak to Josh or Hannah at Pizza East – they will look after you.

Hope this is helpful…

Any of the places in Lancashire Court – Mews of Mayfair, Rocket or Hush. It is not in Mayfair but just over the road in Soho – Mark Hix's bar in his restaurant HiX is also cool. More

Hi Lesley

Your post is interesting. Are you doing some research on UK restaurants?

I think we are definitely seeing a resurgence in ‘British food classics’ on menus with the likes of Mark Hix's new restaurant and Dean Street Townhouse.

I also think some restaurants are starting to put more emphasis on using local and seasonal products as much as possible.

Reply to “Post theatre dining” (in Recommend me a restaurant or a bar)

David,

Completely agree – it is so hard to find a good meal in London gone 11pm.

However, there are a few options that I would recommend for after the opera. The other thing is that dining at this time means it is so much easier to get a table !

1. J Sheekey – One of the best fish restaurants in town. Open till late and great choice for a special meal. Not too far from ROH so can get there quickly after the opera. I like the atmosphere there around 10.30pm as the restaurant isnt too busy as it can be a little cramped when all the tables are full. Romantic spot too and always has top service.

2. The Ivy – can be a bit cliche going to opera / theatre and then The Ivy but again last orders are not till late and food, service and atmosphere is always good. Probably the least special place that I have recommended in terms of food.

3. Le Caprice – although a bit further away from the opera house, I believe last orders are midnight. Another romantic dining room and they always have a pianist playing. I know it is a special meal, but they do a fantastic pre / post theatre set menu (as well as a la carte) for £16 for two courses.

4. Cecconi's – glam Mayfair Italian and another romantic restaurant. Believe they are open till 1am during the week. Fantastic cichetti (italian tapas) and pasta with fresh truffle.

5. The Wolseley – another great choice for after the theatre. Open till midnight. Favourite for actors after they have performed. Always has great ambience and good menu, especially when eating late as one doesnt always want a full three course meal.

I apologise for four out of the five restaurants belong to the Richard Caring empire but it shows why they are doing so well as they offer great food, service and they stay open for after theatre diners.

Hope that helps
