SquareMeal Review of P.F. Chang's Asian Table

Bronze Award

Anyone who has ever tried to find somewhere to eat in the less cosmopolitan parts of the United States will have come across P.F. Chang's (280 branches and counting), which makes the mega brand’s first European outpost a good fit for the touristy hinterland between Leicester Square and Covent Garden. But it merits a look even if you're not a homesick American – and it already has the crowds of international diners to prove it. Interiors are stylish without being intimidating – the feel is upmarket canteen, with very nice lighting – and food that arrives lickety-split quick will see you in and out in time for the theatre or cinema. Some of what we ate was great – zippy salt-and-pepper prawns and fall-apart barbecue ribs were as good as you’d find anywhere – and some of it was pretty average: wok-fried shrimp noodles and a chilli-and-garlic ‘Chang’s chicken’ were something most home cooks could knock up themselves. Mostly, though, the likes of plump pan-seared dumplings and sticky chilli aubergine are Far Eastern greatest hits done to a good-enough standard for the mid-range prices. It’s open for breakfast and brunch, too – think smoked salmon and boiled egg bao – while you can make the most of the late-night opening over barrel-aged cocktails in the LP-lined bar.

Disappointing

Wonderful food, but service was really poor after the first course. A dish was not delivered that we ordered and we were still billed for it. We had to wait over 45 minutes for dessert to arrive and when we said we needed to pay and leave ( just before the dessert was brought out) the bill still had the dessert on. The desserts were disappointing and we then had to wait ages to pay our bill and ended up I incurring parking charges because we had spent a lot longer than we expected. When we mentioned our disappointment at the end of our meal, nothing was done except a 'sorry, we are really busy tonight'. We have visited this chain in other countries and had fantastic food and wonderful service - sadly our Christmas treat to the London branch was a huge disappointment.

As per usual the staff were friendly and knowledgable about the products within their menu. Food was a bit delayed but the restuarant was busy and we were in the middle of a heat wave so I'll give them a pass as this isn't usually the case with them.

Food always comes out consistently good. No deviation depenent upon the team in the kitchen.

WORST DIRTY HOLE EVER

NEVER, EVER in my life have I met such incompetent bunch of people, who are waste of space... The most useless management on the planet has been gathered and hired at P.F. Chang's Asian Table - Leicester Square.

Do not be surprised at the terrible service, hygiene and lack of care, because apparently payments to staff in this place are as quoted by the words of the HR Manager Joanna (who barely speaks English) and General manager Alice "discretionary".

Thanks, but I'd rather go somewhere that people are not miserable and WORKING TO ACTUALLY GET PAID!

In the heart of Chinatown, this doesn't compete
The first UK outpost of the American chain P.F. Chang’s is here, just on the edge of Chinatown and competing for business. Well. On a Wednesday night in summer, the height of the tourist season, it was quiet. Decked out in dark wood and soft lighting, the restaurant itself is attractive and the atmosphere is ok. The staff were a bit hit and miss. My friend is a strict veggie and when she asked if the dishes could be amended to include tofu, the waiter told her no and just to order some sides. There is a lone veggie main dish of grilled vegetables for £9. Really? We asked for the manager, who was lovely and he accommodated her needs. But, the food was incredibly disappointing. Mediocre is the best superlative that I can apply. I ordered the Dali chicken, a Sichuan dish that apparently had a sauce. To call is a coating on over fried chicken nuggets would be generous, more like a smudge. The vegetable spring rolls were a little doughy being slightly undercooked, but the red chili tofu was very nice. The best part of the meal was the egg fried rice, which isn’t saying a lot. Do yourself a favour, stay away from the cocktails. The ones we tried were absolutely undrinkable, play safe and go with a G&T. Finally, the bill came to £80 and I was disappointed to pay it. You can get a much better meal in Chinatown (if you know where to go) for less money and enjoy it more.

Fantastic value weekday menu of fish/chips/peas/tea. A la carte choices equally good - fantastic fresh fish and seafood in a bright and buzzy atmosphere.
