A sympathetic refurb in scarlet and forest-green has breathed new life into this backstreet boozer, but it’s the fantastic range of craft beers that turns this local into a destination for ale aficionados. As with Craft Beer’s other outlets, the big pull is a prodigious array of bottled artisan brews, plus a serious set of 24 draught taps. Bermondsey’s Kernel and a host of new-wave native microbreweries line up for Britain, while Belgium is represented by Lambic, Geuze and Trappist beers from the likes of Westmalle Abbey. There’s a strong Scandinavian team and America also plays a blinder: Hoppin’ Frog’s head-mangling BORIS the Crusher (‘bodacious oatmeal Russian imperial stout’) is one of the folksy standouts. Wines from £15.95, Scotch eggs, epic meat pies (try the chorizo version), twinkly-eyed service and a patio garden complete the appealing offer.
