About

Part of the ‘Padstein’ empire, St Petroc’s is a hotel and bistro which occupies a handsome white Georgian building with bags of character, and is only a short stroll away from Padstow harbour. While those with a bigger budget might flock to celebrity chef Rick Stein’s flagship Seafood Restaurant (which also has bedrooms), St Petroc’s is a breezier, less formal and more affordable alternative.

The dining room here is a light and airy space with a life-affirming coastal vibe, with the relaxing and welcoming atmosphere perfectly complemented by the user-friendly, Euro-accented menu of traditional French bistro classics. Flying the flag for the Gallic region are dishes such as moules mariniere and onion tart from Alsace, which is served alongside a vibrant green salad and a helping of new potatoes. Naturally, Stein’s trademark fish dishes play their part, so you can also expect to come across the likes of prawn linguine with garlic chilli and parsley, or whole sea bass stuffed with fennel and dill and served with a fennel mayonnaise. If you prefer carnivorous delights, instead opt for a steak from the grill, cooked to your preference and accompanied by a sauce of your choice (we’d also recommend adding on a side of frites).

To finish, try sticky toffee pudding topped with Cornish clotted cream or chocolate pave with peanut crumb and a scoop of salted caramel ice cream. For those of a savoury disposition, there is a selection of cheese to choose from, best paired with a glass from the impressive wine list, which offers a good range of affordable styles and varietals to match the food.

On sunnier days, take advantage of St Petroc’s courtyard garden (which welcomes well behaved pooches), while those looking to make a night of it can retire to one of 10 charming on-site bedrooms.

Close but no cigar
The attractive, understated St Petroc's ticks all the boxes for matey atmosphere, fresh generally well-executed food, pleasant staff and last but not least its ungreedy prices. But on our latest visit in November 2014, we felt less cheerleader and more naysayer. On a limited menu the standout starter of squid, chorizo, red pepper and potatoes had hit the 'out-of' button by the time we ordered at 9pm, and there was the option of just two fish mains, neither of which grabbed me. Forced grudgingly into a meat main I opted for the rabbit with chestnuts (£19.95), but this was tough and sinewy and lacking in flavour. The fact, too, that there was no mention of the bed of mash meant we over-ordered on sides. On the upside, roasted red pepper and tomato soup was nice enough, as too salmon with horseradish cream, while scallops and fluffy, fresh plaice (with more roasted red peppers) were our favourite dishes. The wine list was shorter than I remember it being before, but the Rick Stein blanc de blanc was memorable.

Nights off from babysitting our child are scarce – we thought we'd try dinner at St Petrocs. For 30 minutes we had to endure a screaming child on the adjacent table, so loud it was absurd and making every single person visibly uncomfortable and irate. The parents were completely oblivious to the noise and unwilling even to try and comfort the baby. I am fully aware of the difficulties of having children in restaurants as i have one of my own, but yet the staff did not feel they were in a position to do anything as they were too embarrassed. We were asked if we wanted to finish our meal in an alcove where you could still hear the noise but had passed our threshold by this stage. If you are looking for a quiet, romantic meal out i would stay clear of any of the St Petrocs Bistro and perhaps even the other Ricv Stein child friendly restaurants until this changes, especially if they deem it acceptable to allow this. I am amazed such a level of restaurants would allow this. Our appetiser was probably okay but i couldn't actually taste much as my mouth was so dry through irritation. The staff seem pretty clueless so all in all i would avoid as there is much better local competition. My reply from management when asking for a refund for having left after 30 minutes of screaming – utterly amazed; “Thank you for your reply, although we are very sorry that you decided to leave due to the noise from the child on another table, we do feel that as we are a child friendly establishment disturbance of this nature can occur from time to time.”
