SquareMeal Review of Scoff & Banter Canary Wharf

This bar/restaurant concept is dedicated to what it calls ‘great British soul food’. During the day, the kitchen serves up soups, assorted sandwiches, sharing platters and some please-all mains such as rib-eye and chips or goats’ cheese and onion tart, while evening brings an extended menu of revitalised Brit classics. Kick off with a pressing of chicken and ham with pea vinaigrette, move on to shepherd’s pie with savoy cabbage, ham and eggs or organic salmon with shellfish broth, and round off with apple crumble or Eton mess. To drink, expect a well-spread list of international wines and some decent bottled beers. The Scoff & Banter moniker conjures up all sorts of socialising possibilities: grub and chat, food and conversation… you get the picture.

Pleasantly surprised
I booked this because of a 2-courses for £15 offer but then discovered eating a la carte was about the same price. I have a citrus crispy duck starter. The meat was juicy and lovely but the oranges used were flat and non-bitter unfortunately, so I added a load of salt and pepper and it was delicious. The presentation, portion size, and duck quality were excellent. For main I had the burger – all I can say is that it was a masterpiece of taste and design. I congratulate Azura it was just like those stacked burger you get in Australia. It had deep fried tempura pickles and lovely ripe tomato – perfection. I can't wait to have it again. I thought the Rioja wine was a bit low quality – £28.00 for 2012 bottle – but my partner disagreed and enjoyed the wine. The decor of the lobby and restaurant were BRILLIANT – I loved the art and sculptures of white harts. The only real complaint I have is that the cutlery in the restaurant was not properly washed for example when you run your nail down the inside of the forks bits of dried-in food came off – gruesome. Overall a really nice experience!
