SquareMeal Review of The Fable

Bronze Award

The latest Drake & Morgan vehicle off a whimsically styled, postmodernist production line that includes City hits such as The Happenstance and The Folly, this “beautifully created” venue spreads itself over three floors by Holborn Viaduct. Named after Aesop’s Fables, the whole place has been theatrically designed for full-on fun, with lots of books and book-themed motifs, patterned screens, sweeping staircases, floral-shaped chandeliers and a bathtub (“with extracts”) above. Drinks include boutique beers and fairy tale concoctions such as Princess Rossini (Tanqueray gin, sloe, the collector vermouth, blackberry, vanilla and Prosecco), while The Fable’s all-embracing offer extends to mixology classes, a flower shop and bar bites ranging from “delightful” ceviches, Peking duck flatbreads and Wagyu burgers to seared tuna and avocado salad with wasabi vinaigrette or chicken milanese with celeriac rémoulade. Overall, we reckon it’s the best D&M venue so far.

Always a nice visit
The Fable is always a reliable venue for a casual or business lunch. The food is good and there's plenty of choice. The atmosphere is relaxed and the staff are very attentive and friendly. A quick service and prompt paying of the bill makes for a successful lunch!

The Fable
This is the newest addition to the Drake & Morgan family. The location is wonderful as you approach The Fable, from Chancery Lane direction, you pass over the Holborn Viaduct which has a spectacular view over the city. The Fable is named after Aesop's fairytales, and as such there are books and open pages decorating all three floors. Rob (Executive Head Chef) expertly filleted, pin-boned and created beautiful plates of ceviche, with the perfect balance of citrus but not overpowering the flavours of the fish. A delight to eat! Whilst enjoying the canapes (ceviche, mini fish & chips, jacket new potatoes with sour cream, skin-on potato and sweet potato wedges, hot dogs, scallops with mash on a pastry spoon, and mini cottage pies) accompanied by glasses of prosecco, we enjoyed our beautifully created surroundings. There was a well crafted sofa area surrounded by books. Loved the little touches of clay pots over the bar area, suspended floral shaped metal chandeliers and lightbulbs, and a bathtub with extracts above!

We went to check out their new Toast to the Roast (£10) offering available at The Fable and all other Drake & Morgan establishments. Our parents were impressed with the literary references, decorations and general ambiance. David, the Head Bartender at The Fable, welcomed us and treated us to his favourite cocktail of Vodka & White Wine – decorated with a red grape – whilst we waited for our roasts. We had chosen a selection to be able to feedback on the beef, pork belly roast, and roast chicken options. The offer comes with options of white (cabernet sauvignon) or red (grenache) – which were crisp and citrusy, and mellow respectively. The pork belly and the chicken were cooked well, though the chicken was slightly overseasoned. However, my beef roast was not medium as advised on ordering, but well done and had dried out – and also had lots of sinew running through parts of the three slices I got. The Yorkshire puddings were light and crispy, and there was a lovely star anise note to the red cabbage. However, all of our potatoes were oversalted and effected the enjoyment of the meal. In general, it is a good idea for a Sunday meal out, but will be perfect once they iron out the above creases.
