SquareMeal Review of Moshi Moshi

It’s easy to miss conveyor-belt sushi joint Moshi Moshi, tucked away near the bus stops at Liverpool Street station, but – once inside – the surprisingly roomy interior, complete with huge wooden ‘staves’ arching skywards, offers a “very relaxing ambience”. The restaurant is big on ethical sourcing and sustainability, so expect to see the likes of Loch Duart salmon on the wide-ranging menu. Nibble on some salted edamame beans to start, before ordering one of the sushi ‘sets’, featuring a dozen or so items served on a traditional geta (wooden platter), or one of the hot dishes – perhaps Gloucester Old Spot tonkatsu or wild Alaskan salmon teriyaki. Service is “quick and attentive”, and there are lots of discreet booths with “quirky” sand-filled floors too, making this a perfect spot for a quiet meal away from the commuter chaos below.

As a vegetarian I might not be the best person to write a review of a restaurant that focuses on mainly sushi but I love this place. As soon as you walk in from the hustle and bustle of Liverpool Street you feel calm. My husband and I had a lot of bags between us on our first visit and the waiter stored them away for us and showed us to an intimate booth for two. I have since been back and sat at one of the bigger tables at the back, which was equally as private. The service is quick and friendly and I think the food is good value. There are a couple of vegetarian options but both times I have stuck to the ‘Vegetarian Tapas’ as it is so good. Crispy tofu, Miso marinated aubergine, seaweed salad, mushroom miso soup and wholegrain sushi rice all for £13.00, great value. They also do a brilliant carrot and ginger juice, so I come out of there feeling full but happy I've had a healthy meal. Keep up the good work Moshi Moshi!

Moshi Moshi resturant is a great, yet unlikely find tucked away inside on the 1st floor of Liverpool Street Station. It's a well designed venue created by Kaneshiro Yusaku, one of the Japan’s leading restaurant designers and is a compact restaurant with a buzzy friendly atmosphere! I met a friend for a quick lunch one Friday. We were seated in one of the 2 person booths which have some privacy and sand filled floors that overlook the train platforms. Quite quirky! The staff were attentive and quick. The food was delicious and speedy. I opted for the Salmon Teriyaki, my friend had the Sushi platter. Both were good (rating of 4 out of 5). The food is ethically sourced and the restaurant have a good relationship with local food producers, ‘thereby reducing food miles whilst at the same time supporting a thriving and sustainable local economy’. The fish is caught sustainably and there is a good range on the menu. We would definately return!

Okay, my name is Mark and I am an addict! A Sushi addict I hasten to add. So my trip to Moshi Moshi at Liverpool Street recently was lined up as my Sushi fix for the week. As I travel home from the ultra busy Liverpool St, I quiet often get the chance to pop in here, mainly as my train these days seems rarer than an Olympic 2012 spectator ticket. I sit at the comfy bar seating area where the Sushi travels around on the rather slow conveyer belt until someone takes the trouble to grab it. This can of course be an issue if there is no one there to actually eat it. In my opinion a negative with serving fresh fish and eating this way. My visit was around 7.30pm but it was clear to me that some of the dishes on the belt were not entirely fresh looking and therefore unappealing. So they continue to take the conveyer ride as they had done for no doubt some time before my arrival. I do on this occasion order direct from the menu and the food is fresh, tasty and just what I need for my addiction. The spicy tuna hand roll is just that with a nice crisp exterior. My Sardine Miso soup with fresh ginger is perfect and something I will be trying at home. I am not keen that cloths and tea towells are just left out on show next to the sink and other cleaning materials in front of where I am seated. Yes I like the idea of a trained Sushi chef preparing the food in front of me, but I do not want to see the kitchen sink when I sit down for my meal. The staff here are super effcient and always on hand to advise and greet with a smile. I will be back, but may tend more to now order from the menu unless they can think of some way to keep those already prepared and slow moving dishes fresh and ready to be grabbed.

It's easy to get good sushi in the City. But you have to pay for it. The thing about Moshi Moshi is that while you might get (slightly) better sashimi and sushi elsewhere, convenience and value for money are unbeaten and the quality difference is negligible. It's the perfect spot to meet a friend for a quick City lunch that won't break the bank or to sit over a bowl of one of the seasonal hot dishes with colleagues for a gossip. The miso soup is excellent and the Tofu tasty which work for me. And Moshi Moshi also passes my “tempura test” – it is always served steaming hot and still crispy (as opposed to so often getting it five minutes later when it's gone all soggy) and the batter adds flavour without causing your arteries to seize up the moment it hits the table. And if you're craving sushi while in the City but are alone, go anyway – it's a very comfortable place to eat a meal by yourself.
