SquareMeal Review of The Golden Lion - Padstow

Located at the top of Lanadwell Street in the heart of Padstow, The Golden Lion dates from the 14th century and is the oldest pub in the town. Opposite the iconic Cinedrome, it’s also the permanent home of the 'Old 'Oss' used in Padstow's world-famous May Day 'Obby 'Oss' festival to mark the arrival of summer. A traditional boozer with open fires, parquet floors, a public bar and family room, it’s very much the hub of the community. Mingle with the locals enjoying well-kept pints of Cornish draught beer including Sharp’s Doom Bar; otherwise fill up on bowls of soup, hearty homemade pies (fish, steak and ale etc) or daily specials. The Lion is also known for its 'proper job' Sunday roasts, and there are three en-suite bedrooms for those who want to linger.

About

An understated pub with rooms, Padstow’s The Golden Lion is a welcoming and cosy affair, which has won legions of fans over the year thanks to its good-quality, home-style menu of modern pub grub.

The Golden Lion is traditional in look and feel, with verdant greenery tumbling over the window sills outside the pub, while inside you will find plenty of dark wood, nooks and crannies and stools by the bar. The food menu here is far more up to the minute though, consisting of a selection of upmarket pub grub which firmly plants its flag in comfort food territory. To start, you might find yourself tucking into the likes of king prawns flecked with garlic, chilli and lime served with crusty bread, or pressed ham hock on toast with piccalilli.

Main courses are hearty affairs, featuring the classic likes of beer-battered fish and chips with mushy peas and a fish pie topped with mashed potato and melted cheese. There is also a mighty steak burger stacked with smoky bacon and Monterey jack cheese, served alongside skinny fries, while diners wanting something a little more health-conscious can opt for roasted hake served with charred lettuce, sun dried tomatoes, new potatoes and chilli oil.

Indulgence reigns supreme when it comes to puddings too, with The Golden Lion’s menu of sweet treats including sticky toffee pudding with clotted cream and a chocolate and pecan nut brownie with vanilla ice cream. If you prefer liquid afters, check out the pub’s impressive selection of beers, ales and wines.

Too full to move after all that feasting? Simply retire to one of The Golden Lion’s three on-site bedrooms. The rooms are fuss-free affairs, complete with flat-screen TVs and coffee making equipment, and come with the added advantage of being a 10 minute walk from the charming Prideaux Place (an Elizabethan house and garden), and less than 10 miles coastal vantage point the Bedruthan Steps.
