SquareMeal Review of Rucoletta

Bronze Award

Sitting in the shadow of St Paul’s Cathedral, family-run Rucoletta (formerly Rucola) has been delivering good, honest trattoria food for more than 30 years and still manages to satisfy. The sleek, modern dining room is pleasant enough (if a little ‘basic’), but charming service and ‘excellent’ cooking seal the deal. The kitchen makes its own pasta (try the semolina-based scialatielli or twisted trofie with squid, courgettes, white wine and lemon sauce), while mains might run from lamb shank with raisins, crispy leeks and Marsala sauce to cod on pesto mash with cherry-tomato salsa. Antipasti, risottos and traditional desserts such as tiramisu complete the offer. Rucoletta is open for lunch from 12-3pm then reopens for dinner at 5.30pm.

About

Family-run Rucoletta restaurant is an authentic Italian eatery in the heart of St. Pauls, serving classic Italian dishes. You'll find the restaurant right around the corner from St. Pauls station, making it easy to get to from anywhere in London, and perfect for those exploring Central London during the day.

Inside, Rucoletta is minimal but homely, with old photographs of Italy lining the walls, and flowers brightening the solid wood tables. The atmosphere is intimate and relaxed, and friendly staff are on hand to help you with the menu.

Rucoletta specialises in authentic trattoria fare, including a range of pasta dishes, secondi, antipasti, starters and desserts. Kick things off with classics like insalata tricolore with avocado, basil, buffalo mozzarella, tomato, and homemade extra virgin olive oil, polpettine di vitello con polenta (veal meatballs in a light tomato sauce with polenta), or a hot, melting slab of aubergine parmigiana, straight from the oven.

Pasta dishes deliver more traditional flavours, from a classic tagliatelle alla Bolognese, to a spaghetti alla vongole (spagetti with clams), or penne in a spicy all'arrabiatta sauce. Mains are similarly authentic - make sure you save room for bistecca all'Italiana with garlic spinach and roasted cherry tomatoes, or a crispy breadcrumbed cotoletta alla Milanese with parsley new potatoes.

If there's any chance that you still have room, the Rucoletta dessert menu is packed with fantastic sweet treats, including a tiramisu (made to a special house recipe), rum baba, pastierina Napoletana (classic Neapolitan cake with ricotta wheat cream filling), and of course, an affogato. Staff also mix up a mean aperol spritz and negroni if you fancy a little aperitivo and some nibbles, and everything is delivered with generosity in a cosy, welcoming atmosphere.

Magnifico, Stupendo, Maravilhoso!
One should never be born on a planet that does not include an Italy. In addition to contributing beyond measure to high art and music, that great country has contributed enormously to earthlings' joy of living. These are the thoughts that a visit to Rucoletta bring. One should start by stating that Rucoletta is fun. The staff is charming and create a buzz that somehow manages to be an antidote to the City's more stressful counterpart. It is a buzz based on good humour, laughter, the enjoyment of excellent food and outstanding service. I have yet to go to Rucolletta when it is not deservedly full. Nevertheless, service is impeccable, friendly, never rushed. The food is excellent, the pasta al dente, the flavours subtle and never ruined by the needless chili which seems otherwise ubiquitous in London. Think of a superb and knowledgeable chef and add the finest in produce and you will know what it means to have lunch at Rucoletta. I have tried many of its dishes, both starters and mains, and have never been disappointed. Not even slightly. Yesterday I had a dish of swordfish on pasta with aubergine, tomatoes and other wonderful things that is still making me smile. This is not a quiet restaurant. It is full and noisy, sometimes even raucous, but then so is life at its best. Congratulations to all of the people who make Rucoletta a haven of happiness on Foster Lane. Grazie di tutto e di cuore. .

Lunch at Rucoletta
I found this unassuming place on Squaremeal, although I have walked past it a 100 times and never taken it in. However, once inside, the service is charming, the food has more flair than your average Italian and we didn't find it at all expensive. It compares very well to some of the flashier places in that part of the City.

Good food and service, quick turn around if you are pushed for time and good value to quality ratio. I have been half a dozen times in the last few months and the quality is always high, I appreciate the constant high standard.

return to Rucoletta
Excellent value for money – enjoyed so much went back for lunch again the next day. Staff on the ball and very obliging. Food very tasty and well presented and arrived pronto. Noise levels can be quite loud but saying that it was still a good experience and well worth trying for a quick lunch if you haven't much time to spare.
