SquareMeal Review of Annie's Barnes

Flowers adorn almost every surface, & chandeliers are lit in the evenings at this wonderfully romantic spot: just two of the reasons why Annie’s regulars love it. The restaurant has plenty of years’ experience & knows exactly how to operate. It is more predictable than sister-establishments Annie’s in Chiswick & Rock & Rose in Richmond, but kooky nonetheless. The kitchen relies on producing posh versions of home cooking. Fish pie with cheesy mash is an all-time favourite, as is roast chicken with harissa & truffled chips. Standard burgers, steaks & fish & chips pad out the menu. The wine list contains a generous selection of by-the-glass choices, but rosés & Prosecco seem to be the choice of summertime drinking here, fitting with the feminine aura of the setting.

I have visited Annie's several times and have been relatively pleased but not overwhelmed by the food and service. Last month I called to make a reservation and I assumed they must be busy on that particular Sunday evening as they made it quite difficult for me to make a booking. As you can imagine I was more than a little confused when we turned up the restaurant and it was only a third full and stayed that way for the rest of the evening. The waiters seemed disinterested in their diners and stood around chatting and having drinks themselves while we waited patiently for someone to take the drinks order. The food was ok, neither bad nor good, pretty standard fayre and not too dissimilar to decent pub grub although a tad more expensive. Main let down was that service was too slow and staff were not attentive. We were offered dessert and usually I would oblige but I was totally put off when I spotted a cat wandering through the restaurant. There is no place in restaurants for animals (unless they are blind dogs). Overall I was disappointed and will not be visiting again.
