SquareMeal Review of Whighams Wine Cellars

Occupying the site of some 19th-century cellars and named after a cheery Robbie Burns poem, Whighams has been doing good business for more than 25 years – and shows no sign of flagging. With its candlelit booths and cosy nooks, there's something distinctly Old Edinburgh about this New Town institution – even if the mood is occasionally a tad ‘fogeyish’. As you'd expect from the name, wine is Whighams’ raison d’être and the wide-ranging international list is notable for its terrific selection of around 35 by the glass. Wines suggestions are also a helpful addition to the menu, which covers everything from Buccleuch beef salad to penne with char-grilled vegetables, although fish is the star turn – try the mussel and potato chowder, the chilled seafood platter, or sea bream with coconut rice and mango salsa, but don’t miss the famous fish pie.
