SquareMeal Review of Le Boudin Blanc

Bronze Award

“If it weren’t for the excellent service and polite staff, this could be France!” joked a fan of the unadulterated bistro – an old stager that looks as if it’s been plucked from the belly of Paris and deposited in Mayfair without so much as a wash and brush-up. Regulars love the place, praising its terrific French food and charming vibe – although it can get pretty raucous at times (“bring your ear-defenders”). Mind you, any rowdy whooping from the assembled company should be instantly forgotten as “robust” plates of unfussy bourgeois food are brought to the table – “thick, warming” soupe a l’oignon, moules marinière, grilled rib of veal with roasted bone marrow, and – of course – creamy boudin blanc with truffled mash, pistachios and port sauce. The 500-bin wine list is a serious tome, with racks arrayed in the private room-cum-cellar downstairs.

Another firm favourite of mine. Always buzzy, food always good and the staff not at all obtrusive and very pleasant.

Fabulous French restaurant, very authentic, cosy & comfortable with great friendly service - love the outside seating area in the summer.

An unwelcome step back in time
The last time is visited Le Boudin Blanc was a decade ago. It felt dated then, and even more so now. Clearly the place must be doing something right since it was packed when I visited on a recent weekday lunchtime, but to my mind the place demonstrates almost everything that is bad about restaurant culture. Time has moved on. This is the not the 1980s and when I go out I don’t especially want to feel as if I am returning to this era. To list my grievances about Le Boudin: decor, menu, food and service. Begin with the former and maybe the rustic let’s-pretend-we’re-in-France look works for some (the nostalgists), but surely we’ve all moved on from wanting to ape ‘Allo ‘Allo. I thought the placed really could have benefited from a lick of paint too. Next, let’s take the menu: uninspiring would sum it up. Pea soup, steak and lemon tart anyone? Or maybe goat’s cheese salad followed by guinea fowl? I was the unlucky recipient of the latter pairing. My starter consisted of beetroot and tomato segments that exhibited less flavour than comparable items from a supermarket, but at a multiple of the price. Furthermore, the quantity of cheese was stingy to the extreme. Onto the main and had I not been told, then to have identified the meat as guinea fowl may have been a challenge. Oh, and the reason I didn’t mention pudding earlier was that the service at Le Boudin was so excruciatingly slow that I had to leave for another commitment before there was even time to contemplate dessert. It will certainly be more than a decade before I consider returning.

A little bit of heaven!
This place is an absolute find - my first visit was over 18 months ago and i am now becoming a regular - on reading previous comments from other guests - "if it wasn't for the very polite staff, you would think you were actually in France". This is so true, the food is fantastic, the service is excellent and the setting wonderful. Gets a high recommendation from me and is now one of my absolute favourite restaurants in London!

You will not be disappointed!
This restaurant is amazing - everything about it - the food, the ambience, the setting. Nothing was any trouble, the staff were friendly and helpful. My choices off the menu were nothing I have not eaten before in other restaurants but they were the best I've ever tried. Will definitely be returning - in fact, cannot wait!

My husband and I went on Saturday night at 7pm. The food was great, the staff were friendly and helpflul (as always) and the atmosphere was buzzy without being noisy. Our three courses were cooked to perfection and were utterly delicious. I would thoroughly recommend the hot chocolate fondant. It's love on a plate! I can't think of a single negative thing to say. Fabulous place.

We visited for lunch upon recommendation from a colleague for the first time and the food was excellent. To our surprise it was a hot day and we were sat outside which was unexpected but lovely given the weather to eat al fresco. We will definitely be visiting again and will be recommending to other colleagues and friends to pay a visit.

If it was not for the excellence of service and politeness of the waiting staff, this could be France!!! To actually be welcomed on Reception never cease to amaze It is yet another reason to keep returning Excellent food Always daily specials Service exceedingly prompt There is no constant interruption by the waiters to enquire as to the food The ceaseless return of empty plates speaks for itself Criticism, only ONE, the noise Perhaps ear-defenders could be provided As the restaurant continues to be patronised by many Europeans who have a natural tendency to speak loudly , I hold out little hope for a reduction in the decibel level!!! The answer, may be to provide linen table cloths But, three further return visits are already in the planning stage to coincide with the Curzon Mayfair Opera and Ballet Season
