SquareMeal Review of Aubaine Brompton Road

Chic all-dayer Aubaine takes advantage of French café culture’s hold over romance-starved Anglo-Saxons. Baskets of pain de campagne, subtly distressed wooden furniture & soft, flattering lighting would be enough to impress most people, even without the menu of breads, patisserie & viennoiserie, macarons, mille-feuilles and financiers… it’s enough to make you want to cough up six quid for a cup of Mariage Frères tea. But this mini chain of urbane cafés isn’t just good for a caffeine & sugar fix: breakfast & brunch gives way to a menu of fashionable Med-influenced fare, for example roast sea bass with Kalamata olives and lemon oil, lobster spaghetti or Superfood salad with quinoa, beetroot & roast butternut squash. They’re licensed too &, surprisingly, have some global wines slotted in amongst the French contingent.

Great food

Service was very good, helpful, friendly not pushy. Staff dealt with the time problems we gave them with grace. The starters scallops, and carpaccio were perfect and generous portions. The unusual pasta dish with a truffle sauce was delicious.

Very nice for brunch but...

The brunch as really nice, food was great so was service, however I bought 2 desserts  and a baguette and that was disappointing. The bread was very dry and one of the desserts was stale. I paid for those 3 items £10 which was a bit pricey for what they offered.

A very good place overall, warm service although mostly very busy. A wide range of well prepared dishes ranging from “something light” to a full french meal. The patisseries in the afternoon are great and this branch of Aubaine has the added benefit of a truly very pretty setting and good lighting all day. Attention to detail has always been a strong point, but constistency is a key point here. This was on of the initial branches of Aubaine and I recently had to remind myself that these guys have been around for quite a while and keeping up standards far better than other growing chains. Well done. A branch inside Selfridges doesn't happen by coincidence.
