SquareMeal Review of Pepper Tree

Pepper Tree’s canteen-style seating and hangar-like decor aren’t exactly conducive to a leisurely meal. Besides, the people queuing in the doorway waiting for a table make diners who have finished feel distinctly uncomfortable. Nevertheless, this remains an excellent refuelling stop for the busy people coming out of the Tube station on their way home from work, or grabbing a bite before going to the cinema. The menu is a fairly extensive list of Thai and Chinese favourites: usually pretty well-cooked and well-portioned, and delivered quickly. The spices may have been tempered somewhat for the British market, but the pork dim sum, stir fries and the aptly named Big Tum noodles are still appetising, especially as they’re cheap as chips.

Food is cheap and cheerful in this high punter rotation Thai restaurant on Clapham Common. The food is simple and quick. The owner is charming and knows how to run a restaurant where people are coming for quick cheap grub in order to talk about their trip to Thailand X summers ago. What would make this place a little better is if ti was BYOB. The restaurant is open plan with rows of benches where people sit a la Wagamama's. There is a lively buzz and easy view into the busy kitchen. The menu is simple and turn around time is quick. It is a very good place to meet large groups of friends (as tends to be the case). My food and drink review is on the basis that this is not cutting edge Thai food. You won't find something you have not seen before and you may not find your usual favourite (I love anything taramind for example). There are many Thai places within a mile (Thai Orchid for example) but they are slightly more formal where this place epitomises cheap and cheerful. This festivals on clapham common, sunny days, bonfire night crowds and the usual drunken masses in this area who are stopping in for night fuel. This is slightly unfair. It is also good for midweek meals with friends. It is not romantic and if you find yourself here with your partner then you are having a purpose meal (like you're trying to get to the movies quickly) or you're being dumped in a public place. At least the quick service means you won't be lingering for long.
