SquareMeal Review of Gurkha's Diner

Diners prepared to try new flavours are well-rewarded at this Nepalese restaurant: a light, unassuming little place set apart from the main thoroughfare of eateries in Balham. Start with momo cha (steamed lamb dumplings with a zingy dipping sauce), or tareko farshi (spiced, fried courgette with mango sauce). Move on to chulli dishes, cooked over charcoal – the gurkhall chicken, marinated for hours in chilli before it’s char-grilled, is a house favourite – or khasi tang (very slow-cooked lamb shank combined with chickpeas & coriander). It’s an unusual experience for London, but one that keeps people returning for more. Service, for a neighbourhood restaurant, is exemplary. Staff welcome newcomers with warmth, old-timers like friends; they’re helpful & attentive, & happily explain the menu to those who need it.
