SquareMeal Review of Cielo

Bronze Award

You’ll quickly glean from its slick, modern interior (with a contemporary water feature, no less) that this superior Italian isn’t the kind of place that serves up a post-prandial limoncello. Instead, a smart and moneyed clientele enjoy well-executed staples – and a few more unusual dishes – and wines from an unambitious but well-aimed list. The location is prime, on Oozells Square in the award-winning Brindleyplace development, a stone’s throw from buzzing Broad Street, and there are tables outside for alfresco dining. A popular choice with the city’s footballers, according to those in the know.

Went to this restaurant on sunday night with couple of friends and to be honest was really dissapointed. Food was great though. Service was ok but nothing special, had to ask for water 3 times 3 different people as non of them looked bothered to get it for as (yeah it was a jug of water and it was free thats maybe why nobody was in a rush). Mains took a while but as we had some catch up to do we didnt mind. when we got our food it was really enjoyable so have no complains about that. the main dissapointment came after our desserts when manager came over to ask if we would like anymore drinks when we siad that we just gonna finish our wine he stated that all we need to do know is to pay ( we never asked for it as we just wanted to chill for couple more minutes). Manager was pretty rude explaining that they are closing (at 7.30pm!!!) because Italy is playing in the final and they want to watch football!!! First we thought he was joking but when the bill arived just seconds after he left our table we understood that we are not welcomed here anymore. With takeing payment they were so much faster than with giving us water!! Felt really rushed as glases were clared as soon as it reached the table and at the end it was only me who stayed with a bit of wine. It was the first time we went there and definatelly its the last one as well. Dont want to go to places were my presents is not appreciated especially when there is a great Italian restaurant just oposit Cielo.

Very disappointing. I can honestly say I have never experienced such rude and arrogant staff. Rang up to book a table a few days before we planned to go and enquired about the £12.95/£15.95 set menu advertised on the internet. Was told as long as we ordered by 7pm we would could have the offer. Myself and another member of our party of four arrived first. Even though the restaurant was quiet there was certainly no warm welcome or pleasantries exchanged with the waiter, he just looked us up and down, marched us across the restaurant and slammed back the chairs for us. We then started to look at the menus and realised that the menu we had been promised was not there. I enquired about this and was told that the menu had changed over Christmas. I explained to the waiter what I had been advised on the phone and he asked me what I thought he could do about it, no apology or anything. He then called the manager out, who was very intimidating. I explained the issue and he told me I should have looked at the website, which I obviously had done so already, hence knowing about the set menu. There was no apology or anything and he was basically implying that I was lying. They were so rude that we went next door to the Thai Edge. If you have a choice between the two, I strongly recommend the Thai Edge! Gorgeous food and in contrast to the staff at Cielo, delightful, welcoming staff

Arrived for an evening with friends with a table reserved for 19:30. Ignored by management on arrival, and party behind who were obviously regulars were given full management welcome. Once seated a long wait for drinks and over an hour before starters were received. Main courses came out, two out of the four dishes were inedible due to being quite clearly sat on a hot plate over cooking and congealing the sauces. Upon complaining to staff, we were treated with resentment and little respect and an issue was made of re-cooking these meals and we were told that maybe this was not the restaurant for us! We were so appalled at the treatment we received that we asked for the bill. This resulted in the restaurant trying to charge for meals not received and upon speaking with the manager we were informed with children starving in africa we should not send food back!!! Extremely disappointed, dissattisfied with what we understood was one of Birmingham's top Italian restaurants. We will never be back and would not recommend to anyone!
