perch. It’s possible to spot red kites, roe deer and muntjac from the windows of the bright and airy dining room, but look the other way and you’ll see cosy beams, bare brick and open fires – it’s
all reassuringly rustic. Brakspear ales dominate at the bar, although the French-influenced food demands a generous wine list and gets it. Game is a big deal, with pigeon, venison and rabbit
gracing the plates all year round, while beef and lamb may have been reared within your peripheral vision. Two gardens are big enough to remain relatively tranquil – even in summer – and friendly
staff are happy to plan local walks for visitors.
