SquareMeal Review of Bernardi's

Bronze Award

Bernardi's is now closed and in its place stands The Italian Greyhound.

The Bernardi brothers’ eponymous Italian fits right into Portman Village, where appearances might not be everything but are certainly a factor: the neat streetside terrace, marble tables and mildly distressed leather provide a “chilled” bolthole for daytime socialising, the brothers’ Australian influences keep things playful and service is “very accommodating”. One-time Roux Scholarship finalist Sabrina Gidda has a handle on what’s needed in the food department: porchetta with spring greens, salsa verde and polenta roasties for Sunday lunch, aperitivi snacks of polpette and arancini, plus more serious dishes in between. Try spinach and ricotta gnudi with datterini tomatoes and basil, followed by stone bass fillet with mussels, saffron and samphire or lamb rump with goats’ cheese, stuffed artichoke and black olive sauce. Desserts are simple reworkings of the greats, from Amalfi lemon posset with fennel biscotti to mascarpone cheesecake with cherries and pistachio. Also check out the colourful Dog House basement bar and courtyard.

FANTASTIC restaurant and bar - I have been to Bernardis many times for various occasions, and every time is never fails to wow me. From a quick drink or a meal after work, to business lunches or private events, Bernardis always ensures you are feeling welcomed and the food, drink and service cannot be faulted. Plus - the cocktails are amazing and who doesn't like a three hour long happy hour!?

Contemporary not hip. Pleasing not thrilling. Nice but not naughty. It feels like we can bank on Bernardi's for years to come. (So long as they lengthen the wine list).

A warm welcome on a cold November evening to an attractive open dining room with bar. We were seated quickly and settled in to enjoy the Italian menu. We had a selection of home made bread, lovely seasonal Alba truffle fettuccini and Jerusalem artichoke risotto to start, then we both had the plump lamb rump with softly-braised shoulder, bagna cauda and kale, with a bottle of warming red Sardinian Montessu. All this was very good and thoroughly enjoyable and pretty filling so we didn't have dessert. Service was friendly but a bit scatty, and ambiance a bit noisy with a lot of clattery echoes off the hard surfaces. Several of the other diners appeared to be international tourists, unsurprising considering the location just off Edgware Road and near to several large hotels. Overall a very pleasant evening and a good spot in what can be a hectic part of town.

We discovered this restaurant near our offices not very long ago but me and my colleagues absolutely love it. The service is great - they are very welcoming and accommodating. The food is very tasty and to great value and I love the decor and the chilled environment. All in all - it's a great restaurant and I have already recommended it to various clients and friends.
