Rescued from impending oblivion, this spruced-up, community-focused pub is, in indie hands, proving a hit with shiny young middle-class Fulham. The updated trad Brit boozer’s bric-a-brac-y interior includes backgammon and draught board tables, a new darts board, a fairground waltzer car and bike saddles as bar stools – a tricky balancing act after a few pints from St Austell or Brewdog, among the draughts, or a bottle of reasonably priced vino. The Wellie is “not trying to be the Experimental Cocktail Club”, but manages Bulleit Salted Caramel Sour; fruity whisky sling, Haig Clubman; Espresso Martini; and party puncheons served in tea pots, a butter churn and, natch, a tiki Wellington boot. Fired up on one of two terraces, there’s a BBQ at weekends – when the pub stays open until 1am with DJs at its decks. Meanwhile, Sundays see tempting roasts, including Yorkshire beef or Cumbrian pork served with all the trimmings. Quiz nights and live acoustic music are further draws.
