SquareMeal Review of Royal Quarter Cafe

Out of the same stable as the Chelsea Quarter Café and River Quarter Kitchen, this third venture from Doron and Valeria Zilkha is aimed squarely at the Buckingham Palace crowd and camera-toting tourists. Like its siblings, the Royal Quarter Café delivers all-day sustenance in the shape of home-baked pastries, cakes and assorted savoury items ranging from sandwiches, soups and sharing platters to crispy duck salad, veggie couscous with grilled haloumi and pomegranate or chicken with roast sweet potatoes, fennel, pine nuts, parsley and rocket – seasonal comfort food with a healthy edge and bags of colour. All-day breakfasts and afternoon teas are also there for the taking, while drinks span everything from freshly squeezed juices and smoothies to wines and beers. Inside, it’s all white walls, floor-to-ceiling windows, tall bookcases and green leather chairs; outside, there’s a pleasing alfresco area.

Very good breakfast
I work locally to this café and due to our heavy workload my team has found having team breakfast more manageable than team lunch. We visited recently (early August 2013) and had a lovely breakfast. The food was delicious and the staff helpful. There is a fantastic selection of breakfasts – something for everyone. Beautiful décor, light and airy. A friend also visited the loos and gave it 8/10 (good loos always important!). This visit followed an earlier visit which was not successful (the food was beautiful but two friends' hot breakfasts came out cold, and the staff were frankly dozy). But a massive improvement and would definitely recommend.

Awful ...twice!
We actually ended up visiting this restaurant twice in the one day. Big mistake. I had hoped our first morning visit was a one off. The tea was at least fine but my pain au chocolate was rock solid and inedible and my friend's coffee was one of the worst she has tasted. On our second visit I went for a baguette but this too arrived burnt and warm despite my expectations that this was a cold sandwich. My friends Eggs Benedict however arrived completely cold and funnily enough she had expected that to be hot. She had only ordered this option because all the sandwiches which she would have been able to eat (she has dietary restrictions) were already sold out. The place itself looked wonderful. Light, spacious and welcoming. Unfortuately we didn't find the staff to be the slightest bit interested in us. They all looked miserable and our waiter managed to serve us our food without speaking to us or even looking at us. All in all a depressing visit.

Welcome to Victoria Royal Quarter Cafe
I have read Pat B's review and appreciate that the experience on the first weekend may have been disappointing but hope she/he will return. I live and work in Victoria and have come to know Doron and Valeria and their team extremely well as they have other restaurants that I go to. I cannot imagine a more exciting, dedicated and motivated fit for Victoria and its new renaissance. In context, the restaurant opened on Saturday 22nd June and the first week is always a difficult period, Having opened 6 restaurant and mobilised many residential buildings I know first-hand that best laid plans can always be reviewed in hindsight. As with any new venture it takes time to settle. I hope everyone takes time to come and enjoy an amazing menu and lovely team which will be an important part of the new and exciting future of Victoria, a wonderful place to live, work and visit. We are lucky to have a unique and vibrant offering on our doorstep. Everyone was so excited everyone came! I waited until yesterday. The salt beef is fabulous, as is the eggs benedict, the bread, the cup cakes…We are all so pleased they have arrived and will be part of our community. They are generous, warm and above all want to give people in Victoria a lovely place to eat, drink and relax. PS: The owner never sits down, this was probably his first break in weeks. HKC

This place shouldn't be open until it's ready!
As a local, I was very much looking forward to trying this out – and in all honesty, first impressions were great as you soon as you walk in. Spacious, bright and airy with a lovely smiling welcome from our waitress. However, the experience from then on was probably my worst in London – despite only 4 other couples there and us being the first to arrive, my friend's breakfast order (smoked salmon toasted sandwich) took 40 minutes to arrive, I had to ask three times for my espresso, my porridge arrived with a teaspoon and the side order of toast was rock hard with no butter … and to top it all off, when the bill arrived, we were told they didn't accept credit cards! The waitress was absolutely charming and so lovely so I cannot fault her at all (in fact, she was the one saving grace) but the manager needs to get this sorted – when I asked him whay my friend's food was taking so long, he said “bear with us, we have only just opened” (poor excuse). As we left the restaurant, I couldn't help but notice he was calmly tucking into a cooked breakfast without a care in the world! FYI, the two tables next to us also complained (and one couple walked out refusing to pay). If you are going to open a restaurant, then get it right first time round – and don't play the “we have just opened” game! Will NOT be going back!
