SquareMeal Review of Kaia at The Ned

Silver Award

One of the more casual options in Soho House’s gargantuan Ned hotel, Kaia is an Asia-Pacific restaurant specialising in on-trend bowls of healthy food to share – an Instagram-baiting mix of rainbow-coloured vegetables and dishes from a robata grill.

We enjoyed a platter of crispy prawns pepped up with wasabi mayo, and a flaky teriyaki salmon from the robata grill served with palate-pricking pickled ginger. The stars of the show, however, are the gorgeous-looking poké bowls; try the ahi tuna, bursting with colour and flavour thanks to chilli and roasted pineapple, creamy avocado and chunks of fresh fish.

Desserts are less diverting; our selection of mango, green tea and black sesame mocha were served so frozen that it was hard to appreciate the flavours. Nevertheless, at Kaia you can still count on what are now the hallmarks of The Ned – friendly, attentive service, a buzzy atmosphere and stylish setting (communal tables, vintage-style desk lamps). Don’t have time to eat in? Many of Kaia’s dishes are available to take away.

About

Describing itself as an Asian-pacific restaurant, Kaia is found at the far-end of The Ned’s expansive ground floor and boasts a menu inspired by countries with tropical climates – reflected in the restaurant’s menu of colourful and vibrant dishes and drinks.

Kaia is also a slightly more casual proposition than most of the restaurants in the hotel, featuring counter-style seating and an open kitchen, as well as a few regular tables in you are dining in a small group. The restaurant is open daily for lunch and dinner and serves the same menu throughout; you can kickstart your meal with crispy prawns with wasabi mayonnaise, edamame beans studded with salt crystals or Wagyu beef tataki served alongside truffle mayonnaise.

Next up, you can choose to order one of the colourful and Instagram-friendly poke bowls (fillings include tuna and salmon) or you can instead pick something from the robata grill – black cod with tarragon miso perhaps, or maybe spicy Hawaiian-style chicken with sriracha mayonnaise and coriander. There are a few options for vegetarian diners too, including robata grilled corn paired with wasabi peas, and asparagus finished off with sesame and honey dressing.

There is a whole section for sushi and sashimi too, where you will find the luxe likes of lobster or salmon and avocado rolls. To round things off, tuck into typical Asian desserts such as mochi balls with mango, matcha or coconut flavouring.

On Saturday afternoons, you can head to Kaia for a bottomless brunch, which sees your food paired with two hours of bottomless Mango Fizz cocktails. On the brunch menu, you will find Asian-Pacific takes on classic brunch fare, with options to choose from including a spicy bacon bao bun or a teriyaki burger topped with fried egg and cheese. Don’t miss the Japanese fried chicken either.

Don't where to begin with this place

Arrived early and was shown to a bar table, my guest opposite.  We asked to sit side by side but was a clear no.  Also informed quite sternly that the table would be required back in 90 minutes.  Our drinks order was taken and took over 20 minutes to arrive.  The food order was not taken for sometime and arrived in a peculiar order - our main sharing platter before the snacks/nibble starters we ordered.  The food was ok but not great - the dumplings were cold, the aromatic duck platter was tiny (£26 ouch), asparagus (I reckon two into junks) and part of our order never arrived.  At 1:30pm we asked for a coffee to be told our table was required back in 15 minutes!  We had to argue for a coffee and the waitress was extremely rude.  I did not pay the bill but I suspect there would not have been change from £100!  Extremely disappointing and certainly would not return in a hurry.   High-end prices, for high-end food and failing on all fronts!

Overpriced terrible service

Came here for a nice evening with my wife, we heard the reminder of 'your slot is for 90 minutes, so we'll need your table back at...' three times before sitting down. Our white wine arrived at room temperature, the manager, Maricci, provided us with a cup of ice. The food was drowning in sauce and arrived all at the same time, on the small table, making it a terrible experience. When we spoke to the manager Maricci, she was not accommodating and charged us for the warm wine anyway.
I would not recommend this place. And won't return.

Food tasty, good selection of hot dishes,

The restaurant was very busy and service was poor, and difficult to hear across your table.  However the meal was enjoyable with a good buzzing atmosphere.

Wood fired pizza, almost as good as those in Napoli.
