A plush new refurb and sole focus on afternoon tea has repositioned the Georgian – previously a noisy, jack-of-all-trades restaurant atop Harrods – as an elegant, calm haven from the hubbub below. Designer Christopher Guy Harrison’s new furnishings match the glorious art deco skylight, and the graceful surroundings are enhanced by a dickie-bowed pianist. A few savoury dishes (lobster club sandwich, perhaps) survive the transition, but the superlative afternoon tea is the main point. Despite its £48 price tag, you certainly get value for money, starting with a glass of pink Champagne and a miniature prawn cocktail, before finger sandwiches, a selection of miniature cakes (from an itsy lemon meringue to a moist, stamp-sized Victoria sponge), hot scones, a Harrods trifle, and strawberries in Pimm’s. Delightful staff will box-up leftovers to take away. The house blend of tea – a mix of Darjeeling and Assam – accompanies the repast.
