SquareMeal Review of The New Club

There’s much to admire about this American-style diner overlooking Brighton’s seafront; the place has rightfully gained a loyal following since opening in 2013. Sea views, outside seating and a cool interior (mixing huge photos of New York fire-escapes with comfy leather banquettes) are all part of The New Club’s charms, but it’s the cooking that gets tongues wagging. The menu is a tour de force of dude food: from slow-smoked pork belly chops in a sticky barbecue sauce, to a trio of lobster and crab sliders. The ‘dirty burger’, made with aged chuck and bone marrow in a brioche bun, is one of the best you’ll eat this side of the M25. Add an excellent weekend brunch menu, plus a good line-up of cocktails and craft beer, and it’s easy to see why the venue has become a must-visit destination for both locals and day-trippers.

About

After a visit to a New York City restaurant, which consisted of an old dining car hauled onto a pavement serving food that under-promised and over-delivered, the idea was born to bring unfussy, delicious food to Brighton’s seafront. The New Club offers everything from brunches and dinners, to innovative seasonal plates and Sunday specials. There is a strong focus on sustainability, where almost everything is made from scratch on site, and ingredients are gathered from local suppliers. Along with this, they recycle regularly and sell direct trade organic coffee from Union. However, moving away from the dining car style, the restaurant is set up on Brighton seafront with large windows letting in natural light, and offering sea views. The general vibe is ultra-relaxed, tongue in cheek, and the sort of food you want to wash down with a pint.
Each menu is extensive, offering brunch, dinner, desserts and even a kids club. Expect classics like eggs benedict, and a jazzed up full english with slow roasted balsamic tomatoes, thyme roasted mushrooms and chargrilled sourdough for breakfast. Then for lunch, there are tacos, American ‘fish and chips’, salads and burgers from noon. One of the most notable dishes is the ‘Dirty Burger’, which comes with fries and a spicy club sauce, and was previously awarded 5 stars at the National Burger Awards.
Dinner continues to be heavily influenced by America, with things like ‘million dollar nachos’, or the New York strip steak, that has been sous vide in beef fat, pan-fried and topped with bone marrow butter, then served with oxtail macaroni, caramelised chicory and walnuts.
With a drinks menu that covers hangover cures and ‘hard’ brunch beverages, you can expect bloody marys, cucumber and elderflower fizz, and tutti frutti mimosas with banana liquor, strega, fresh orange, and maple syrup.
Set on Brighton’s seafront, The New Club hopes to bring a slice of New York City to the seaside.
