Gaucho Chancery Lane (125-126 Chancery Lane, London, WC2A 1PU)

All the food on the menu here (not just the steak) is just great – can't fault it. The wine list is also fantastic.

However, it's very expensive for what it is, and when I last visited (2 weeks ago) the service was unattentive and terminally slow. Perhaps, in this climate, they need to start being a little less complacent.

Roka (37 Charlotte Street, London, W1T 1RR)

Smart venue, the menu and food are fantastic, and the service has been good on the last couple of occasions that I've been here.

However, value for money is not on the agenda – it's very poor for what it is. And when you're paying that much money, a 2 hour time limit on your table in the evening is very poor…

Bibendum (Michelin House, 81 Fulham Road, London, SW3 6RD)

Just brilliant – had a Friday lunch here.

Great location, fantastic menu and food, civilised atmosphere, polite but unobtrusive service, and the fixed price weekday lunch menu is good value, considering the calibre of the restaurant. Would recommend it to anyone.

Brompton Bar & Grill (243 Brompton Road, London, SW3 2EP)

Smart location, great menu and delicious food.

What a shame that the service and atmosphere were poor. We asked our waitress various simple questions about the food on the menu and she couldn't answer any of them. We also asked for a dessert wine and no-one seemed to know what that was – it was only the front of house who did and located a bottle for us.

We went on a Friday night at 7:30. By 9:30 it had filled up with local affluent 20 somethings (which is fine) but when they all start standing around tables having a chat and crowding the space, it all gets a bit much. The high (or low) point of the evening came when the front of house came to warn us not to use the men's toilets as someone had been sick in them.

It's a shame, really, as the menu and food were both absolutely delicious.

Bocca di Lupo (12 Archer Street, London, W1D 7BB)

I had a late lunch here yesterday. Despite being in a rather seedy side street in Soho, the restaurant itself is very smart and and very classy.

First impressions weren't good – the front of house was rather matter of fact and no-one offered to take our coats.

Service was average to poor – very friendly staff and service was quick at first, but 15 minutes after ordering a glass of wine, I had to ask where it was and then it took another 5 minutes to arrive. One of the main courses that turned up wasn't what we ordered, and the same happened for dessert, although to be fair they didn't charge us for the mistake on the dessert.

Starters, sides and dessert were all delicious but I had the pork and foie gras sausage, which was a bit liquidy in the middle, which made me wonder whether it had been cooked all the way through. I'm all for not killing lamb or beef, but when it comes to pork, you can't be too careful.

Prices are high and it's not great value for money, so despite the smart atmosphere I wouldn't come here again.
