Eagle Bar Diner (3-5 Rathbone Place, W1T 1HJ)

What fun!

An absolutely brilliant place to go with friends if you just want to have a good time.
The food is uncomplicated american diner grub with everything expected present and correct. Burgers and hotdogs are all good value and tasty and other options such as jambalaya are also tasty. Although not the most refined food, it is perfectly pitched and very good value.
The highlight, however, is the cocktail list – at least 6 times the length of the menu. Work your way through the 8-odd mojitos, a dozen daquiris and a handful marguaritas and you'll be warmed up enough to try the boozy milkshakes! Good non-alco ones too for the designated driver!!
Service could be better – a case of extremes for us – over attentive on one occasion, positively absent for the next!
However, the place has a buzzing atmosphere, the 8 seater booths are good fun and the smashing value for money makes this a place to return to when you just wanna have a good time

Number Seven Bleeding Heart Yard (Bleeding Heart Yard, Greville Street, EC1N 8SJ)

Editor's pick

The Bleeding Heart Bistro is not somewhere you go only once…

… or twice!

If you like hearty french peasant food (like most people do), then the Bistro is for you! Without the reverance of it parent next door, the Bistro is more like the bar tabac next to the Stade de France rather than the directors box!

The waiters call to each other in French and enjoy friendly banter with more courageous patrons (I made a flippant remark about the state of french rugby and was heckled all night!)

The food is everything you'd expect and more. Although it may show less finesse than the restaurant, the bistro still packs a punch in flavour and offers all the classics – salad nicoise, cassoulet, steak frites, duck confit etc. all is cooked to a fantastic standard and the portions are far from stingy!
The wine list is bottomless and the sommelier's eyes will light up if you let him guide you on a journey festooned with big burgundies and bordeauxs.

A smashing place with smashing staff and smashing cooking. I've got their number on speed-dial!

Chez Gerard (36/40 Rupert Street, W1D 6DW)

Editor's pick

Great if you're playing it safe and love french food. None of the wow factor of the Bleeding Heart or Chez Bruce but remains a good option for those seeking Gallic solace. The Rupert Street branch is a great setting although it can get busy and very cramped!

The staff are friendly but you wonder whether if pushed they would reallly know whats what on the menu. that said, you don't really need much help with solid french staples such as onion soup or baked camembert.

The steaks are the highlight and its refreshing to find a chain restaurant that knows how to cook a rare steak! The portions are very generous and the puds are great too – creme brulee, tarte tatin… can't go wrong really!

Wine is served by bottle glass and carafe which is good and the bar is fully stocked with decent lagers and spirits.

Fairly good value for money and if you keep your ear to the ground you can pick up some good offers – recently got half price meal. I'd recommend steering clear of the Covent Garden branch tho because I've heard horror stories from several people.

Bombay Bicycle Club (95 Nightingale Lane, SW12 8NX)

Perfect indian takeaway.

Menu offers the classics and just enough for the more adventurous. Sides and sundries the same.
Hyderadi lamb and chicken jaisalmer recommended. Online ordering system also a plus. Very consistent (use A LOT)!

Can't comment on the restaurant but the staff in the takeaway (Tooting) are prefect gents.

Definitely better than the average indian and good value for money.

Rhodes W1 Brasserie (The Cumberland Hotel, Great Cumberland Place, W1H 7AN)

Although the food is undoubtedly well sourced and well cooked, the menu lacks inspiration and the setting is disappointing.

Staff try to make up for it but nothing can hide that you're paying well over the odds for food that is better cooked, cheaper and served in nicer restaurants in any Chez Gerrard or Auberge.

Wouldn't really recommend this because there are so many better options.

Chez Bruce (2 Bellevue Road, SW17 7EG)

WE LOVE THIS PLACE!

PErfect for all occasions – dates, anniversaries, boisterous family meals, private groups… This place really is the pride of South London.
The staff are all so friendly, enthusiastic, knowledgable and make the experience all the better. The atmosphere is relaxed and uncomplicated. The sommelier is a genius and the food is awesome.

Creamed morel taglietelle, foie gras parfait, fried duck egg, navarin of lamb and roast veal are all heartily recommended whilst the cote de boeuf and cod and olive oil mash recommend theirselves. The puds look spectacular but I'v never managed to resist the cheese board – a real experience!

We were once dining with family and were offered complimentary dessert wines to match our picks 'to make up for the delay in receiving our main course' – we hadn't even noticed! Bruce Poole then came out to check we were OK.

I feel guilty if I don't visit at least every other month although the recent price increase has made it more luxury. At Sunday lunchtime's however, its still an absolute bargain!

Lamberts (2 Station Parade, Balham High Road, SW12 9AZ)

My girlfriend and I spent a wonderful evening at Lamberts. The staff are welcoming, attentive (but no overly so), knowledgable and happy to make recommendations.
The atmosphere is more suiting to couple and dates than raucous family events but I dare say that large groups would be made to feel equally as welcome.
The menu is short and seasonal, championning british ingredients. The Sharps Sheep in 3 ways (mutton, wether and lamb) was amazingly well cooked and conceived whilst my girlfriend's gressingham duck was also delightful. And anywhere with a Neals Yard cheeseboard is good in my books!
The set menu is fantastic value (£18 for 3 courses) and the saturday/sunday lunch menus look equally good. The wine list offers plenty to choose from both by bottle, carafe (300ml) and glass and offers as much for those with both deep and shallow pockets!
We'll definitely be returning… I fancy another go at that lamb!
