Reply to “Square Meal 3 Stars – Accurate ?” (in Recommend me a restaurant or a bar)

I would certainly go to The Square before Le Gavroche and Corrigan's. Arbutus is a different price to the other 3 restaurants but certainly is worth 3 SM stars for the otherall package – my clients love it and it is sensibly priced. From what I believe SM stars are given to ‘overall package’ not just food – you can see this in the mix of pirces/types within each category.

Re Gordon Ramsey – it is still an iconic restaurant with exceptional food. To me a bit stiff/formal/traditional and not my first choice but I can see why it would get 3 SM stars.

I can't undersand Miss Sushi point – I use SM the whole time for Japanese/Indian suggestions. I agree that these are great cusine types to take clients to and that one must not be a ‘French cuisine style’ snob – very few people are now days.

I would hope that SM doesn't just take reader reviews in to consideration. Just as Miss Sushi does not like the over positive 10/10 one should also watch the over negative a la trip advisor. More

Reply to “Do you tip, even when it is a bad experience?” (in Restaurant & bar talk)

The tip is for the whole service experience and if any aspects ‘kills’ it then I do not tip. I think the tip should be easily ‘won’ but certainly should not be a given. More

Reply to “£150 to spend on Lunch or Dinner.” (in Recommend me a restaurant or a bar)

A classic one, two, three…
1) Set lunch at The Square – great value and you get all the chef's extras as well. Good for romance. 2) Christmas shopping and a walk up and down Bond street
3) end with an evening cocktail at Claridges. More

Reply to “Square, Marcus Waring or Cinnamon Club ?” (in Recommend me a restaurant or a bar)

I alway think you can not beat The Square – Howard always delivers and I like the light airy room. Having said that Marcus Waring is the newer of the restaurant and he very much has a point to prove since splitting away. I presonally find it a bit too formal. The Cinnamon Club is excellent but it all depends if you want to go Indian on this splash out. More

Reply to “Barcelona Tapas Bars?” (in Recommend me a restaurant or a bar)

Thanks for this – in the end I went to Comerc 24 and had the tasting menu for lunch. Fantastic, orginial, modern take on posh tapas. Highly recommended. More

Reply to “Please Please please can we have a blanket ban on Mobile…” (in Restaurant & bar talk)

Should definitely be banned but I think it is very difficult for restaurants to enforce and needs to be handled sensitively by staff. If they are big spending regulars it is rather tricky telling them to ‘get off the phone’. It is so easy to stand outside if you need to make a call. So it all really rests on common decency and consideration for other – which is sometimes not that common. More

I alway take vegee clients to Italians – Alloro or Zafferano. Or posh Indians like Amaya. More

Reply to “Can anyone tell me the best fixed price lunch menu in London” (in Recommend me a restaurant or a bar)

I think for top class food you can not bet the set lunch at The Square.

Otherwise Le Gavroche – for an all in price with wine. Went to Murano last week and their set lunch is excellent too and somewhere newish. More

Reply to “Turn Times… greed or necessity?” (in Restaurant & bar talk)

I think the important thing is that you are made aware of this at the time of booking and then it is up to you to agree to the ‘terms’ of the restaurant – no different to any other business. But ideally the restaurant has a decent bar that you can retire to in order to finish pudding/coffee/drinks. I get more annoyed with cover charges and having to pay for bread. More

Thread “Caviar – what is all the fuss about?” (in Restaurant & bar talk)

I had some beluga the other night, cost me a fortune. Certainly bought me some attention from the girls but it simply not worth the money in my opinion. I hear also that it is run by the Russian mafia and they are killing off the Sturgeon population. Not that I'm that poltically correct as I love fois gras. More
