Locanda Locatelli (8 Seymour Street, W1H 7JZ)

Editor's pick

Serious Italian, served by serious people! The kind of food that makes you feel inadequate and stupid- "Excuse me what is that?" Once explained, cooked and served, heavenly! The night I dinned with my wife, Prince William was there with Kate, along with at least five big blokes all there to take a bread stick in the throat for his Royal Highness, so lets be honest my wife could have been served three courses of peanuts and she wouldn't have complained. That said the food was out of this world. The wine list is very good, clearly mostly Italian, and offers good value. The coffee, perhaps not surprisingly was terrific. The bill, huge. Good to take wife or someone you were reasonably confident of sleeping with. Wasted on in-laws and penniless friends or relatives.

Galvin at Windows Bar at the London Hilton (London Hilton, 28th Floor, 22 Park Lane, W1K 1BE)

The best views in town certainly although not from every table, do ask. Its got a formal, contemporary feel the food is right up there, I am a fan of the amuse bouche if it feels like its been thought about as opposed to being a convenient way of using up some unwanted ingredients, here its very definately the former. That thoughtful approach is carried all the way through the meal. What appears on your plate is clearly the product of people who have great skill and the kind of palates professionals should have. The atmostphere is serious, the clientele what you would expect to find in hotel like the Hilton without the hookers. Great place to take your parents, loved one(s) or major client.

Boisdale of Belgravia (15 Eccleston Street, SW1W 9LX)

It serves very reliable food, the emphasis is on the qaulity of the ingredients rather than an imaginative use of them. Great meat and fish, the best haggis in town- try it you will be pleasantly surprised-and very very good wine list that provides plenty of choice from all major wine producing countries and good value. The service is patchy, like too many restaurants Boisdale's seems to almost exclusively recruit staff who are "passing through". The atmostphere is relaxed and very clubby, clientelle by and large blokes who like meat. They also have a wonderful covered roof terrace. Good for smokers and carnvors, less than ideal for those well in touch with their feminine side.

Le Cafe Anglais (8 Porchester Gardens, W2 4DB)

Went prepared for the worst, why would you want to dine in a shopping centre? What they should do is offer a service where clients are led blindfolded from their cars to the restaurant. Once you are in the room, your experience changes dramatically. I like the room, at first sight it feels a bit characterless and I suspect that anything less than half full it suffers, but full and it feels alive and vibrant. The food was kind of Ivyish, simple but done well enough. The wine list isn't terrific, not a great choice I recall. The service wasn't great, a couple of dishes took a long time to arrive. If you live locally, good enough, probably not worth the trip from North London.

Orrery (55 Marylebone High Street, W1U 5RB)

Editor's pick

Its good, of course it is, but so it should be considering the prices. A menu that is full of imagination as well as classic dishes. The service was ok, strong on visual appeal not so strong on the basics of providing a meal quickly and efficiently. Wine list is immense, lots of variety. The room is an odd shape but it works, the atnostphere (dinner) was quite formal, the clientele, the type you expect in that part of town, a well dressed contemporary crowd who all like themselves a bit too much. Good for intimate dining with well dressed friends, bad for relatives young or old whose table manners can't be trusted and who don't scrub up well.

Restaurant Critic

L'Absinthe (40 Chalcot Road, NW1 8LS)

A restaurant that offers wines no more than £10 or £15 above the retail price? the owner is clearly mad! So worth the trip, the owner and front of house, apparently used to work with Marco P W, some of that madness has clearly rubbed off on him, wonderfully exuberient and passionate man, the atmostphere is lively, buzzy and very relaxed. The food, steak and chips with a bernaise sauce, was terrific, full of flavour and barely requiring a knife. The wine list is great and offers the opportunity to drink some wines that most of us admire on a wine list before moving on to something a little less "heavy" on the pocket. Exactly the kind of local restaurant that should and deserves to succed.

The Albemarle (Brown's Hotel, 33 Albemarle Street, W1S 4BP)

First time I have eaten there since the recent..ish refurbishment. Fabulous room, classic proportions contemporary feel. The best size tables in town! Its a formal style of dining but not stiff, the staff are very good indeed, courteous, well informed and smiley. The set lunch offered some interesting choice, the trolley which changes every day, on the day I went was carrying a terrific looking Beef Wellington. The menu is traditional English. Dining companions likely to be mature and well heeled. The food was cooked beautifully, oh and the bread was the freshest I have tasted in in a London restaurant.

Roka (37 Charlotte Street, W1T 1RR)

Can only speak about the downstairs experience. Now looking a bit tired and faded. The food is good but its expensive, the wine list equally so. Service is fine, the atmostphere is very vibrant the clientelle mostly young. I have never left feeling I got value for money.

Villandry (170 Great Portland Street, W1W 5QB)

Love this place, simple but very good food. Don't go expecting the unexpected or the unusual. Its always been a simple short menu. The wine list is extremely good and full of unusual things as well the standards. Service is always efficient and friendly. The room can feel bare, I have never had dinner there and I suspect it would feel slightly cold. At lunchtime its always buzzy. Any restaurant that leaves allows you to help yourself from a large bowl of whipped cream to go with you chocolate pudding gets the thumbs up plus a fab delicatessant next door.

Bam-Bou (1 Percy Street, W1T 1DB)

Its been around for a long time but its still very good. The service used to be awful, all attitude and not much else, but last time I went I was pleasantly surprised to find the waiting staff, smiling efficient and seemingly pleased to serve. The menu has changed little over the years but it does what it does very well, the banana fritters are the best. The wine list is ok not many surprises.

Cipriani (23-25 Davies Street, W1K 3DE)

Have been a couple of times and always I am afraid been disappointed. One of those restaurants where it matters where you sit. If you are in the back, its like being in a different restaurant and not in a good way. The food is expensive and good if unremarkable. By and large at lunchtime its full of property people, although possibly less so these days. Atmostphere is lively if you are in the main room.

Cecconi's (5a Burlington Gardens, W1S 3EP)

Like The Ivy but Italian. One of the few places in LOndon where eating at the bar is as good an experience as eating at the table. The waiting staff are enthusiastic but not always on top of things. A bit cramped near the entrance, you definately don't want to have the first table on the right. Food is good particularly the veal milanese which would comfortably feed two. All the pasta dishes are tremendous and starter size portion would satisfy most appetites if you were having two or three courses. Clientelle is well heeled and by and large on the mature side. Wine list clearly majors on Italian but not exclusively and there us value to be found plus prosecco on tap!

The Ivy (1 West Street, WC2H 9NQ)

The benchmark for many, and it still delivers. A great room, good if unremarkable food, wonderful staff and an atmostphere that lifts your mood as soon as you sit down. Have been fortunate enough to dine privately upstairs and I would recommend it to anyone looking to entertain 50 people.

Bentley's (11-15 Swallow Street, W1B 4DG)

If you like your fish, then Bentleys is as good as you will get. Upstairs is formal and a bit stiff, downstairs more casual and a little more lively but not buzzy. The food is very good, oysters terrific, cod, a guilty pleasure these days but here a fat juicy one! Wine list terrific and very knowledgeable approachable sommeiler. Your fellow dinners are likely to be "mature" but this is a place to enjoy whats on your plate.

The Wolseley (160 Piccadilly, W1J 9EB)

The room and setting are sensational. Staff are the best in town, the atmostphere is always buzzy. Food is reliable, never sensational, always good. The only place in town where I think you would feel equally comfortable having breakfast, lunch, tea and dinner. It is unique.
