Stately manor to hotel might not be the most surprising transformation but Hand Picked Hotels’ four-star Chilston Park is no run-of-the-mill conversion. It ticks all the boxes: scenic location (in 22 acres of rural parkland), an illustrious past hosting high society and a blend of traditional interiors with modern conveniences. Look more closely and you’ll find pieces of the past everywhere, with artefacts dating back to the 17th century. Many of the 53 bedrooms feature original fireplaces, four-poster beds and quirky antiquities. The range of event spaces is just as attention-grabbing, from the Star Room with its stunning ceiling centrepiece to the handsome Library or the elegant Orangery, a lovely space for daytime events or evening receptions and dinners. The self-contained Coach House lends itself to conferencing during the day but can also be combined with the Stable Bar and Tack Room for a summer barbecue come evening.
