René Dee at the Royal Horticultural Halls - 'Venue Vendor' from Square Meal Venues & Events Magazine Autumn 2007 Information:

The MD of the Royal Horticultural Halls tells us more about his space.

My name is René Dee.
I am the managing director of the Royal Horticultural Halls.
I have worked here for 16 years. I’m here because I love my job and the events industry. I like the environment, it’s a challenging and people-oriented business.
They call me persistent because I’m renowned for not ducking issues. I take the bull by the horns and don’t follow the crowds.
I’ve been in the events industry a long time – around 20 years.
My first event was the Victorian Dolls’ Fair, an interesting mix of collectors’ items that reflected the then rather Victorian image and aspect that the halls had at that time. I vowed to change this image and I believe I have.
I’ll always remember the Millennium party we hosted at the venue for 700 homeless people in conjunction with the charity Crisis. It was extremely difficult, but very special.
The most valuable lesson I’ve learnt so far is to trust my own judgment.
My venue works because it is a multi-purpose venue – it can be all things to all people.
I particularly like the art deco Lawrence Hall, which, with its striking features, gained iconic status when the BBC used it for its ident for five years. [It was the location for the pre-programme trailer where acrobats unfurl themselves from lengths of red ribbon from the ceiling.]
I’d use it for awards dinners and product launches because of its sheer size and striking, powerful presence.
If I could change anything here, I’d build a tunnel connecting the Lawrence and Lindley Halls to the conference centre.
People always comment on how friendly we are as a team.
You may be surprised to hear that events have been held at the Royal Horticultural Halls since 1904. I believe we have one of the most comprehensive venue history archives in London. They reflect everything from suffragette meetings, sporting events, trade and consumer fairs to cultural highlights that mirror the social history of the nation.
Recently, we have added the £7m Wisley Glasshouse in Surrey to our portfolio [see news story on p. 67 for more information].
My favourite lunch spot around here is The Cinnamon Club. It’s a great place to entertain clients, and everyone likes the food there.
The best pub nearby is The Cask & Glass [tel: 020 7834 7630] on Palace Street – I like the real ale they serve.
After an event, you’ll find me on the train back home to Brighton.
When I need inspiration, I turn to my team.
Later this year, I’m looking forward to escaping. I love travelling and have a passion for places that are wild and untouched.
In 10 years time, I hope to be as active and innovative as I am now.
I still want to rule the world.
My famous last words will be ‘never say die’.
