Talk about a prime location. Andaz Liverpool Street is just round the corner from Liverpool Street station & straddles the border between the high-flying City & laid-back Shoreditch. It has a dozen event spaces, but our favourite is the Temple. Here, the hotel’s eclectic approach to interior design veers into the gothic in a converted Masonic temple that’s become one of London’s most distinctive venues.

The story goes that Terence Conran, the hotel’s former owner, literally stumbled into the Temple when he dared to enquire, soon after taking over, what on earth was behind the long-neglected wooden doors. It’s easy to imagine his surprise on being confronted with the windowless room’s zodiac-inspired blue & gold ceiling, marble & dark wood interiors & imposing twin thrones.

These days, all the ritualistic designs & unique features make it an ideal location for themed dinners & presentations. It recently hosted a magicians’ conference & is the venue for the hotel’s regular comedy night. The Temple is also a popular spot among arty types – resident artist Sam Jury exhibited here, & its distinctive chequerboard floor provided the backdrop to the video for rock band Kasabian’s latest single, Me Plus One.

On a practical note, the room can hold 90 for a standing reception & 50-60 for dinner on round tables. The room has its own wood-panelled foyer, too, which can be used as a reception or breakout space.
