Originally built to house the dead, The Crypt at St Martin-in-the-Fields is now very much a place for the living. The cadavers were moved at the beginning of the 20th century, but historic tombstones continue to adorn the floor and the ceilings are still Georgian and brick vaulted. This architecture brings the backdrop to the fore, creating an exalted atmosphere – and talking point – at formal dinners and parties. If guests are sitting down, there’s room for 200; if they’re drinking vertically, you can invite up to 350. Home to the Café in the Crypt during the day, the space is only available in the evenings: from 6.30pm on Sundays, Mondays and Tuesdays, and from 9.30pm the rest of the week.
