'High Ground' - Reader Event at Altitude 360

Square Meal Review of 'High Ground' - Reader Event at Altitude 360 ?

Spectacular views, delicious food and one of the sunniest days of the year combined to make an August evening at Altitude 360 our most successful reader event yet

Following gloomy predictions of an August washout weatherwise, we couldn’t believe what a beautiful day our reader event on 19 August turned out to be. The views from one of London’s loftiest event venues, Altitude 360, are spectacular even on the mirkiest of days but as the Square Meal Venues & Events team gazed out over a cloudless evening sky, we were blown away by the beauty of the city skyline. Equally impressive were the sheer numbers of guests who came along to our third reader event of 2009. Over 500 event planners made their way up to the 29th floor of the Millbank Tower, greeted by Champagne and canapés from in-house caterers Salt & Pepper. Interactive food stations made the most of 8,300sq ft of event space. The pasta bar and mobile hot-dog man proved popular but were somewhat eclipsed by the run on maki over at the interactive sushi station, where charming Japanese staff admirably kept up with demand. ‘I’ve never seen people pile so much sushi on one plate!’ commented Rosalie Graham, head of marketing at Colliers CRE. Delicious circulating bowl food, including an innovative chicken popcorn and chilli sauce concoction, was complemented by a choice of two cocktails: the tequila-based Paloma with gomme, pink grapefruit juice and fresh lime juice, or a refreshing Bacardi-based Cinnamon Mule. Plenty of fizz from Lindauer was topped off with no less than 10 different desserts, including colourful cupcakes, doughnuts and fruit lollies.

But the main attraction of the evening was London’s magnificent skyline, which inevitably stole the show. ‘I was really blown away by the event space and the stunning views,’ said Sharon Pain, personal assistant at PWC. And recession worries certainly seemed to have been put aside judging by the number of smiley faces captured by our photographer. As the sun set, people retired to the banquettes that lined the windows and the venue seemed to take on a whole new persona as the city was transformed into a mass of twinkling lights, encouraging guests to linger a little longer to savour the view.

This year has proved a very eventful one for Altitude 360. The main event space has doubled in size to 8,300sq ft, prompting the name change from Altitude to Altitude 360 to reflect the 360-degree views that have now been opened up. The added space boosts capacity to 600 standing up on the 29th floor, increasing its appeal to clients looking for large-scale drinks reception venues. ‘I was very impressed and would definitely consider it as a corporate entertaining venue for my firm’, said Janeen Buchanan, a senior marketing communications executive for law firm Collyer Bristow LLP. Our event also marked the launch of the River Room, introducing 7,000sq ft of space on the second floor of Millbank Tower. This can be split into auditoriums or screening rooms, or simply two separate function areas. Combined with the main event space, the River Room ensures the venue can now stake its claim as London’s largest riverside venue with views, holding 1,200 guests between the two floors. Don’t discount the venue for smaller events though: our guests were impressed by the hi-tech electric walls which can subdivide the space.
