Best classic Sunday roast in London

Some things are at their best when they stick to the basics, and this is true of Sunday roasts. Check out our pick of the most traditional roasts you can find in London below.

Story Cellar, Covent Garden

Yorkshire puddings and rotisserie chicken

What: Tom Sellers' rotisserie chicken-focused concept has started running 'Cellar Sundays', in which the two Michelin-starred chef and head chef Stephen Naylor have created a contemporary twist on a Sunday roast. We'd argue that rotisserie chicken is the thing to get here, but perfectly pink roast beef rump, pork belly with crackling, and beetroot wellington are also part of the deal. All come served with a platter of puffy Yorkshire puddings, honey roasted carrots, buttered greens, pumpkin puree and an intense, viscose gravy that takes four days to make. It's certainly one of the pricier roasts in this list at just under £30 a head, but it's without a doubt one of the best we've tried. If you still have room for pudding, don't sleep on its homemade bread and butter pudding, which is made with brioche for an ultra soft texture, and swimming in tonka and orange custard.

Great Central Pub by Matt Fletcher, Marylebone

sunday roast in giant yorkshire pudding

What: You've had a Sunday roast before, but have you ever had an entire roast with all the trimmings served inside a giant Yorkshire pudding? That's exactly what's on offer at this pub-inspired restaurant inside five-star The Landmark Hotel. Perfectly pink roast beef, caramelised carrots, cabbage, broccoli, fluffy roasties, horseradish and a rich gravy are all served inside a crisp Yorkie. You know it's gonna be good.
Where: 222 Marylebone Road, NW1 6JQ
How much: £26 per person

The Laundry, Brixton

Table filled with roast dinner dishes

What: The Laundry doesn't do a Sunday roast by halves, and you'll find a cracking selection of centrepiece mains - think a spatchcock chicken for two with honey and mustard bread sauce, or Hereford sirloin with creamed horseradish and Yorkshire pudding - served with bottomless veg and gravy. If that's not enough, you can also choose from a selection of indulgent sides, from a gooey cauliflower cheese, sage and truffle gratin to sticky honey-glazed carrots. We urge you not to skip pudding; there's a warm chocolate chip cookie served with vanilla ice cream that steals our hearts every time.

Quality Chop House, Farringdon

Roast beef and a Yorkshire

What: The clue’s in the name of this lauded British chophouse, where the ‘quality’ of its ‘chops’ is paramount. Of course, its Sunday lunch menu is as traditional as they come, with a choice between lamb with mint sauce, rump and brisket with horseradish cream, and pork belly with apple sauce. Desserts end things on a fun note, with the likes of popcorn pannacotta!
Where: 88-94 Farringdon Road, EC1R 3EA

Origin City, Farringdon

roast beef with yorkshire pudding at origin city

What: This bit of Farringdon and Smithfields is famously quiet on a Sunday, but that feeds into the charm of Sunday lunch at Origin City, which feels like having a slap-up roast in a sleepy little village. One thing is for sure - Origin City knows how to cook a piece of meat; the roast beef (40 day-aged pasture-raised, organic black Angus) is beautifully cooked, ruby red in the centre but cooked to perfect rare, and towering Yorkshire Puddings are some of the best we've had. If you're a group of four plus we recommend going with the 'The Mother of all Roasts' where you and the crew get hulking piles of lamb, pork and beef delivered to the table, along with all the sides and accoutrements.

Think braised lamb shoulder with mint sauce and gravy, pork saddleback with apple sauce and roast beef Wellington with red wine and shallot gravy. Truly an elite strain of pub, The Princess's Sunday lunch is just as impressive as you’d imagine. Starters include cured sea bream with jalapeños, grapes and pickled apple, while roast mains feature stuffed Norfolk Black chicken with sourdough bread sauce, an apricot and walnut nut roast and pork loin with apple sauce. It centres around a joint of dry-aged boneless Txuleton beef, which comes on a sharing board with beef dripping roast potatoes, seasonal vegetables, homemade Yorkshire puddings and its signature gravy. Acme Fire Cult, Dalston

sunday roast at acme fire cult

What: Smoked meat and veg specialists Acme Fire Cult ought to do a great roast, and the hulking meat platter available on Sundays doesn't disappoint. On our visit it was loaded with smoked chicken thighs, dense, fatty chunks of cotechino sausage, a gorgeous, thick-sliced beef rump and more. It's pretty good value as well - you can order it for a minimum of two people, but we reckon that amount probably feed three with a few sides. Acme ticks a lot of other boxes too - it's dog-friendly, the excellent beers come from nearby 40ft Brewery, and particularly gorgeous on summer days when you can sit outside. The rest of the menu is available too so you can mix and match between a smattering of regular snacks and a meat tower. All in all, it's a great Sunday roast experience.

The Parakeet, Kentish Town

A table of sunday roast dishes

What: The Parakeet opened to great acclaim in 2023, and we’re rather pleased it’s decided to add a Sunday lunch menu to its roster. Starting from just £20 for the veggie option – a celeriac Wellington – it's pretty good value too. Meaty options include hay-smoked roast chicken, lamb and roast beef, and all are served with spring greens, roast potatoes, seasonal root veg, Yorkshire puddings and carrot and swede puree. Tickle your tastebuds with its tantalising spider crab croquettes to start, and you won’t go far wrong with its chocolate torte to finish.

The Audley, Mayfair

A dark wooden pub interior

What: Despite having had a multi million pound makeover in conjunction with its smart sister restaurant upstairs, Mount St. Restaurant, The Audley retains a local boozer feel. Screens up high show sports, while the laidback, friendly team serve from behind the bar. Hints at the pub’s pedigree lie in the red and orange crazy paving style painted ceiling (done by artist Phyllida Barlow) and red lacquered bathrooms, as well as in the details of the Sunday lunch menu. Start with crudités and dip or a pint of prawns before moving onto the main event. There’s only one option, and it’s roast beef cooked medium and perfectly pink. The meat and gravy (respectfully brought on the side to keep the spuds crispy) are served with carrots, potatoes, cabbage and cauliflower cheese, as well as a craggy mountain of Yorkshire pudding stuffed with slow-braised meat in cooking liquor. Don’t skip pud - the chocolate torte is very good.

The Lanesborough Grill, Hyde Park Corner

The Lanesborough Grill roast dinner

Accompanying your perfectly pink beef is a crunchy Yorkshire pudding, horseradish and apple cream, a bowl of crispy roasties with veg and an addictive sticky sauce. Of course, Sunday lunch at The Lanesborough cannot simply begin and end with a single course. This three-course affair starts with the likes of Hereford beef tartare with crispy potato, egg yolk, shallot and sherry dressing, and ends with a whiskey and pecan brownie with praline ice cream.

Like its sister restaurant, Hicce Hart specialises in seasonal British dishes using locally sourced produce, including its Sunday roast. Choose from a half roast chicken, beef rump or rolled pork belly stuffed with herbs and apricots, which is served with caramelised parsnips and carrots, crunchy roasties, mushy peas (yes) and a crisp-as-anything Yorkshire pud. Bebe Bob, Soho

roast chicken at bebe bob

What: One of our low-key favourite openings of 2023, Bebe Bob's roast is a simple - albeit slightly extra - formula. First, three types of caviar, with mother of pearl spoons to scoop with. Then, a choice of roast chicken or a different roast chicken, but when the chicken is this delicious, who cares? There are some excellent starters on offer too - including some lovely smoked salmon on rye bread, and excellent jamon Iberico with cornichons - but the story is all about that golden, crispy-skinned roast chicken, wonderful chicken fat roast potatoes and cauliflower cheese. A solid wine list backs things up, and the gorgeous interiors make this a good choice if you want Sunday lunch but a bit fancy.
