SquareMeal Review of Locale Blackheath

Locale’s south-of-the-river Italians display all the trappings of far starrier venues, only with a trattoria mindset. ‘Music, the clatter of plates & people chatting’ combine with designer looks, open kitchens & on-trend ingredients to create a winning combination that might surprise those who would otherwise leave this chain to the Boden set. Stone-baked pizzas & handmade pasta (prepared using Italian eggs – an important detail) are the obvious choices, but there’s much more on the ‘tantalising’ menu. Rosemary breadsticks wrapped in Parma ham are good for ‘stuzzicare’ (nibbles) as punters deliberate the merits of, say, bruschetta with n’duja, pumpkin gnocchi with smoked ricotta, Lancashire suckling pig with Marsala or Earl Grey crème brûlée. A few slots on the strongly Italian wine list are reserved for interlopers from France & the New World.

Stay away!!
Went to this restuarant for a 30th birthday, service was a joke, food cold, I would say this restaurant is a pretentious over priced venue! Won't be going back!!

evening at Locale
I have been going to Locale for years now. I found this restaurant by chance a few years ago when I use to go for Physio in Blackheath. I thought to myself I must try it and since then I have been going for my birthday and my mum's and always at Christmas. I even go to some of the themed evenings..the last time was a few weeks ago where there was live singing. Food is always tasty and the cocktails are a must Karen Rose

Not as good as I remember
Having previously been regulars it had been some time since we had dinner here and we were looking forward to it however we left feeling let down. The restaurant itself maintains its lively hustle and bustle atmosphere and I cant fault the service but the food has definitely deteriorated since our last visit. My veal meatballs starter was lukewarm and the main course vegetables were bland with the potatoes bordering on the raw. Having coffee away from the tables, seated by the window next to the bar was a pleasant relaxing way to finish the evening, and was probably the highlight. With so many alternative eateries in the immediate area Locale faces stiff competition, the quality of the food used to help it stand out as a favourite venue of ours and I'm sad to see it slip.

A great place to wine and dine
I looked up the menu for this place before and realized there were not many options for vegeterians, however, the cocktails (being happy hour when we went) and the ambience of the restaurant, was at the utmost high end. This little restaurant, was cute and the decor was absolutely stunning. The service was a little shaky to start with, but as the evening progressed, things were amazing. My boyfriend mentioned how he loved the food (being a meat eater) and didn't even complain that he was hungry a few hours later! The atmosphere was great, and the food was good. A place I would recommend if you were going on a date!

I visited Locale Blackheath for the second time on a mild October evening with my fiance and future mother in law.. If it had been a chilly evening however, the sumptious reds of the walls and inviting Chesterfield sofas in the bar area, would have definitely warmed me up! The deep red walls are decorated with large black and white prints of Italians ( I assume…) either glugging the vino straight from the jug, or dangling sheets of pasta above open mouths. The art is slightly at odds, in my mind, with the ambiance in the premises. The pictures suggest a Tratorria to me and not necessarliy the sophisiticated and sleek establishment I feel Locale is. Anyway, as you ascend the staircase the chefs smile as they work as you look to the open kitchen. I personally love an open kitchen and in fact seated myself to be able to watch the creators at work! Before we took our table we did have a drink in the bar area, and sank in to on one of the afore-mentioned sofas, and gosh, they were terrific! My cocktail was a perfect beginning to the evening. The 3 course mid week menu is very tempting as mentioned above but actually we decided to go from the a la carte. I had the Mozarella Caprese which was delicious and simple. For my main course I plumped for the mixed fish grill served with wild rice. This really was a taste of the sea, with salmon, seabass, squid and prawn, all cooked perfectly with the tastey ‘from the grill’ flavour. Squid, sadly so often over cooked, was just right, and the prawns were delicious, and I enjoyed getting my fingers dirty. The accompanying rice was fluffy and the wild grains tastey and adding interest. I'd be interested to know if they use fish from sustainable stocks, and resolved next time not to forget to ask! The service was good and attentive, our waiter was able to deal with any querries we had about dishes and was knowledgable on the winelist, and indeed we enjoyed the bottle he recommeneded us. The bar is lovely and the cocktails were delicious. We were kept slightly longer than we wished waiting for our bill but, really that wasnt a problem. The bill for three, two courses, bottles of wine and water, aswell as four drinks in the bar was a shade over a hundred and twenty pounds which is not unreasonable bearing in mind our enjoyment of the food and the good service. My girlfriend has been five times, her mother four. Its easy to be good once, but to continue to maintain a high level of service and food is difficult, and I feel Locale does this. I look forward to my next visit!

What a difference a year makes and I’m afraid in this case a turn for the worse. My former favourite Italian in Blackheath has changed from the award winning authentic food to focus on unadventurous, bland staples with the accompanying change in clientele: On my most recent visit no fewer than three of the dinners were sat at tables talking on their phones. The service is certainly still excellent and you really can’t fault the ingredients however for the price many others do it better.
