SquareMeal Review of Blacklock Soho

Silver Award

Billing itself as a great value steak and chop house in central London, Blacklock’s on-trend feel and great food is definitely worth talking about, with the cool basement dining room becoming a well-known hot spot for West End diners on the prowl.

Blacklock’s incognito street entrance (be careful not to miss it) adds to the allure, although it won’t prepare you for the rocking basement room that is full to bursting with a garrulous young crowd. Vintage Blacklock foundry irons are used to press the likes of pork, lamb and beef chops on the charcoal grill, which also lends its smoky flavours to daily specials such as maple-cured bacon.

The most popular option on the menu though (and a favourite of ours) is Blacklock Soho’s all-in sharing option, which sees the day’s ‘skinny’ pork, beef and lamb chops piled onto strips of toasted flatbread which soak up the meat juices, with sides ranging from beef-dripping chips to courgettes with Doddington cheese. For £20 a head, this sharing-style feast is remarkably good value in this part of town and is a carnivore’s dream.

The fun list of cocktails is also a steal, with sips starting at just five pounds a pop. If you’re not a lover of Porn Star Martinis though, you can instead pick from a clutch of British beers and wines on tap. You can make a reservation if you wish, but Blacklock Soho keeps back a fair amount of tables for walk-ins. The gargantuan Sunday roast meanwhile is often hailed as one of the best in London and tables for this can be booked up months in advance.

Blacklock has gone on to achieve huge success on the capital’s dining scene, subsequently opening two further locations in the City and Shoreditch, and we wouldn’t be surprised to see more opening sometime soon.

About

The original Blacklock restaurant which has now led to various different branches in different area of London, Blacklock Soho still strives to provide the highest quality of meat to Londoners. Blacklock Soho manages to provide customers with the feeling of being in a classic chophouse with an added air of trendiness, meaning that it’s a great spot to visit with friends for a mid-week meat fix, or to tuck into one of London’s most impressive Sunday roasts at the weekend.

Located on Great Windmill Street, the restaurant is based underground; this means that as soon as you pass through the main entrance, you head down some stairs to the warehouse-like dining room. Long communal tables, which are dimly lit from above, stretch across the space, and on blackboards are scribbled the cuts of meat which are available that day.

The menu is a carnivore’s dream with every cut of beef, pork or lamb that you can imagine on offer, with their fantastic chops the headline act. If you can’t decide what to try, there’s the option to go all in for £20 per person and that gets you pre chop bites, followed by beef, pork, and lamb skinny chops, all served on top of a charcoal grilled flatbread, and a choice of sides. The sides on offer include wonderful beef dripping chips and barbecued baby gems.

On Sundays it’s all about their award-winning roast where you can also go all in, and have a pile of roast pork, lamb, chicken and beef served to your table, with all the trimmings you could possibly want, and of course a jug of thick gravy. Puddings include a thick cheesecake served at the table, as well as a classic bread and butter pudding.

A relatively short but sweet wine list is accompanied by a selection of brilliant house cocktails which cost just £5 each.

The thin chops were wholly underwhelming and just piled limply on the plate as a mountain of indifferently cooked meat with decent seasoning.   The starters where tasty.  The staff were very good.

Finally! A place with great service

In post lockdown times great service seems to be a thing of the past, but Blacklock has upped their game. The service was on point and the food is very good! This place is a must for meat lovers

Amazing Sunday Lunch
This was a real Sunday Lunch treat thanks to the amazing food and excellent service. We first visited Blacklock back in January after hearing so many good things about the place and our experience then was fantastic. While chatting to the manager having said how much we enjoyed everything it was put to us that we must come for a Sunday Lunch. So with that in mind we looked for a space in the calendar and she very kindly booked us in. This took us to yesterday as the day chosen. Our arrival was once again given a friendly welcome and even nicer the fact they remembered us. On looking around the roast dinners looked amazing but we had to be patient. You can choose one of the roasts either Beef , Lamb or Pork but we liked the majority plumped for the All In Sunday Roast which is a mixture of all three meats. We started first though with the two dishes for the table the Pigs Head on Toast & Coal Roasted Scallops with Black Pudding and both were absolutely delicious. Now it was time for the main event the All In roast and oh my god it's stunning. The vegetables & roast potatoes are on the bottom then two of the biggest Yorkshire Puddings sit on top before the beef , lamb & pork is draped over the puddings. We also decided to order two of the sides the Roots & Gremolata as well as the Minted Peas & Horeradish only because we wanted to try as much as we could. Everything is cooked to perfection so succulent & tender just heaven on a plate While enjoying a little rest before dessert I spotted this drinks trolley in the corner which had to decanters on it so when I asked our waiter what they were he said one was a whisky cocktail and the other was the Spring Negroni to which he made us one each and very nice it was to. It was then time for dessert to which they only do one but it is fantastic a homemade White Chocolate Cheesecake with Summer Fruits a dessert lovers dream So there you have it a truly amazing Sunday Lunch comes to an end and who knows when I'll be back. I know one thing it won't be long as the food is fantastic matched equally by the friendliness of each member of staff. Therefore please take my advice if your in London and think where can I get a great Sunday Roast then head to Blacklock for a lunch you won't forget. But please make sure you book as it's very busy on a Sunday?Until next time Thank You All at Blacklock for an amazing Sunday Lunch

Amazing Chops
What an absolute treat this Meat feast turned out to be. Having seen lots of pictures and some reviews I really couldn't wait to visit Blacklock. So as we were in London to see a show it wasn't hard to choose where we would be eating afterwards. You arrive at the door entrance thinking that you could see the restaurant but in fact it's downstairs. So as you descend down the stairs the amazing aromas meet you. There is definitely a great vibe to the place and the staff were very friendly. We started with a cocktail and their own Blacklock Brew lager. Then the waitress came over to guide us through the menu as there are so many different cuts of steaks & chops. We decided to choose the All In which was amazing value for money and gave you a chance to sample a variety of the delicious chops. We started with some delicious Pre Chop Bites which are included in the All In deal Cheese & Pickle , Pigs Head & Kimchee & Egg with Anchovy. This led us nicely onto the main event a fantastic selection of Skinny Chops (beef rump, lamb cutlet, lamb t.bone, pork loin, pork rib & pork belly) along with our choice of sides Beef Dripping Chips and the best Sweet Potato I've ever had as it was 10hr ash roasted . We also ordered a couple of extra sides which I do think you need a winter salad & the highly recommended Barbecued Baby Gem lettuce with anchovy dressing. They had a nice selection of sauces , which the Garlic Marrow Spread was heaven. After finally finishing the amazing feast we did need a nice break before dessert which they only did one. But it was well worth the wait a truly fabulous Homemade White Chocolate Cheesecake with fresh Rhubarb in a separate bowl. So with our stomachs we'll and truly full this brought to an end a glorious dining experience and one that would very highly recommend. I would also say that if there was more than Two people then although open all day on Saturday they were very busy. But once you've been you'll understand why. It was also nice to chat with Beth one of the managers who showed great interest in what we thought during and after?

Blacklock rocks
It’s often been said there is no such thing as bad publicity and a huge amount of the column inches written about new London eatery Blacklock seem to focus on the fact that it is housed on the site of a former brothel at the margins of slightly seedy Soho. Sure, this helps, as does the no-booking policy which ensures queues of desperate would-be hipsters at peak times, but what matters here is the food. This is reason enough to ensure Blacklock’s success. It’s also good value and the place has a great vibe, as evidenced by a recent visit undertaken by a friend and myself. There are no vestiges of the building’s previous life and the model here – both in terms of décor and menu – is one premised on simplicity: think white-washed walls, chunky wooden tables and an open kitchen. Similar to the ever-popular and successful Burger & Lobster, Blacklock is the antithesis of choice – what you see is what you get. It’s all about wonderfully high-quality (organic) meat, cooked pink over charcoal and then pressed with the eponymous Blacklock iron. Diners chose, beef, pork, lamb or all three. We went for the latter option, sharing their ‘all-in’ platter. The meat was juicy and luscious and the decision to provide starch in the form of grilled flatbread (which soaks up the meat’s juices perfectly) is a masterstroke, far more inventive than the ubiquitously pedestrian chip. The sides also spoke of quality, an amazingly intense dish of sweet potato (apparently cooked for ten hours) and beautiful pairing of charred courgette and chicory, topped with stilton. It’s simple, but it’s effective. Our food was also helped down with a very reasonably priced and quaffable carafe of Californian Pinot Noir. It was clear from where we sat that others were having a similarly good experience as us and the staff also seemed enthused about the job they were doing. There was a real buzz about the place, helped too by the great selection of tunes being played. While we loved it, one – easily rectifiable – quibble is that Blacklock still does not have a functioning coffee machine, despite being open for several weeks. Put this to one side; go and enjoy, but be prepared for the queue.
