I chose Union Jacks to take my daughters friend to for lunch today, thinking that she'd enjoy eating at Jamie Oliver restaurant. I have to say, we were both very, very disappointed. The menu was pretty basic, but that was ok, given that we expected the food to be amazing. We both had chicken liver pate to start with – unimaginatively served on a plate way to small to eat it without some of it going off the edge of the plate. She ordered fish and chips, which was extremely average. I ordered sea bass with kale and skinny fries – the fish was over flavoured with garlic and herbs, so the delicate flavour of my favourite fish was completely lost and I ended up with a plateful of garlic flavoured fish along with a very oily (way too much butter) overpoweringly garlicky plate of kale. My (described as gooey-meringue) desert was rock hard and reminiscent of schoolday pudding.
The restaurant was virtually empty, which I originally put down to it being the first Monday in January, but having eaten there, is almost certainly in part to do with the distinctively uninspired food.
