I returned recently to the Cinnamon Club, having not been there for a few years. I will leave it another few years before I go back again.
We started in the bar. The service was slow, the staff were offhand, and the bar seem to be populated by people who had been in there for a little too long. A waitress came to tell us our table was ready. Although she carried a drinks tray, she suggested that we carry our own glasses as she would not remember which drink belonged to whom. Understandably a tough task as there were four of us.
The food was quite good, but by no means inspiring. Portions were small and even the two ladies in the party felt underfed.
The service was awful. A decanted bottle of red wine was poured before it had been tasted. Main courses (lukewarm) were served initially to three people; the fourth person had to wait a few minutes. Staff remained offhand and disinterested. Someone who I presume was a manager came to ask us whether we had enjoyed our food, but was already turning his back by the time we answered.
All London restaurants are pricey, but Cinnamon Club struggles to justify its prices. Wines are between 25% and 35% too expensive.
When we came to leave, there was a queue of about a dozen people waiting for their coats. I suggested to a member of staff who seemed to be at a loose end that he might like to help. Somewhat grudgingly, he obliged, meaning that we had to wait for no more than five minutes – our stay being prolonged a little by one coat being mislaid and one of my guests having to take a trip into the cloakroom.
It was a dinner with a couple of good friends, so we laughed off the crudity of the service. Had it been a more formal event, I would have been highly embarrassed by the whole evening.
