A good night out but not what we anticipated. The Savoy is still the ultra glamorous Savoy you expect, and with all the wow factor you could possibly want when you enter the Foyer. But in the Savoy Grill it is now blingy rather than breathtaking. The service is fine, the food is good. Nothing to be scared of. But nothing like the Savoy Grill of old. In fairness, the prices are half what they were. But the wonderful fine dining experience with impeccable service and exquisite food is gone. Instead it is noisy, with tables close together. Dress code on a Saturday night for men was largely trousers and a coloured shirt, some jackets, but also the odd pair of jeans. For ladies, make a little effort, and most things will be fine, (though maybe leave the jeans at home). This is Gordon Ramsey at the Savoy, this is not the Savoy Grill of old.
However, that said, it is very popular. We were there for a late dinner at 9.30pm as the restaurant was completely booked before that. Upon arrival at 8.30pm the American Bar was too full for us to get a table for pre-dinner cocktails and at 11pm, customers were still arriving to be seated for dinner in the restaurant. The atmosphere was buzzy and people were enjoying themselves. With a bill for dinner of around £400 for four, including wine, a night out at one of London's most iconic hotels was fun, memorable and still special.
