This was not the first time I have been to Roast and whilst dinner and sunday lunch were good, I think breakfast is where they really are great. A quick stroll around the market gets the appetite going but it's nice to escape the crowds and relax in the very civalised setting of the Roast restaurant. We were a party of two, and were seated on a small table besides two others which would probably work better for a group of six diners. Two other parties of two were briefly placed at the other end of the three small tables and both asked to be moved. The third party sat there stayed and then another couple arrived and were placed on the middle table, which was pretty cosy. The diners didn't complain but the waitress didn't think this was right and moved them. It all seemed a little strange and although we were never moved, the coming and going was disturbing and distracting… The waitress was very helpful though and the food was pretty good too. I would say that one of my poached eggs was a little overcooked (never experienced this before) but my second egg was as I would expect from Roast. The cooked tomatoes were not good though… Really quite hard and very bland. I know this is not shocking for February but surely Roast can overcome the challenge of the winter tomatoes.
When we went to leave, the lunch crowd was arriving. It was hideous. You couldn't get out the door and have to queue for a good 5-10 minutes for our coats. Roast – you really need to stagger the table times more to avoid this chaos…
I still think breakfast at Roast is a really nice thing to do but this time didn't feel as special as other times. Packing the crowds in, really distracts from your enjoyment and for once, I left feeling I could've cooked this at home just as well. Hopefully this was just an off day and the feel good factor will be back next time. If not, I'll go elsewhere as it's priced to be special, not average.
