We went for dinner last Saturday night to mainly see the outstanding view and have good food to match.
We weren't dissapointed with the view and we were very lucky to get one of the best seats in the house. The food was good but nothing exceptional. The whole concept of ‘sharing’ is a bit bizzare as everything on the menu is not set up as a sharing meal. rib eye steak being an example. We were a party of 6 with two vegetarians so sharing just wasn't an option given that the other half of the table are meat eaters. The only thing that was shared were the desserts.
Service was quick and attentive but we were told that due to the sharing idea whoevers meal came first was given first. Lucky we didn't have to wait too long until everyone had their meal though. The food was at an ok price but the wine was overpriced.
The cocktail bar had a great view as well and was a lovely room. But this is were it stopped at being nice. The cocktails were very overpriced at £12.50 each and took 15 minutes to make 4 drinks. Two of which were simple G&T's. We asked if we could come back in here after our meal but were told that we had to pay a cover charge of £12 perhead as there was a band on. This was completely unacceptable considering we spent nearly £800 in the restaurant!!! We went to a Hotel 1 minute walk about and spent our money there instead.
There is way too many waitresses / staff that seem to stand around and do nothing and the lights in the toilets are way too dim. We were very lucky to have an early dinner and watch the view in the light, sunset and night and then not be moved til 9.30pm. Sadly this was the only great thing about eating at The Shard – the view!!
