Possibly the worst meal I have ever had, served by (not even possibly BUT) the rudest manager I've ever come across.
On arrival, walking into the restaurant is just awkward. No one welcomes you – the staff don't seem to know what is going on. Our table was not set. Friends were left downstairs, rudely told that they didn't have a booking whilst the rest of us were at the table. They were completely ignored and left standing foolishly at the bar – what's more, than to be ‘looked down’ by the bar man and not offered a drink!
The wine list is very impressive and extensive – so much so, that we were asked if we'd like to talk to the ‘wine expert’.
The first thing he asked was “what is your maximin you want to pay?”. I have never been asked this, at any restaurant. It is of no business of anyone, what we can afford or to discuss the amount of money we are set to pay for a bottle wine. Options should be given rather than making the table feel incredibly awkward.
We asked for a full bodied wine, which this was not. VERY far from it. His complete attitude, manner and ‘flicking through’ the menu pages showed he had absolutely no idea.
The oysters were brilliant. Some of the best I have ever had. The oysters shuck to perfection. The crab salad starter was very tasty BUT full of shell. The anchovies was a very bad choice – they were served in a sort of cold pickled stew. Very weird. Not good and NOT explained on the menu. I don't get it.
The main course was very below average. When I asked the waiter what he thought of the squid and watercress main, his face brightened up and said it was excellent. Perhaps he won a prize for selling the dish. What it should say on the menu is ‘grilled squid salad – served with watercress literally taken from a bag and dumped on a plate’. To pay £17 for this is just a joke. The watercress was completely inedible. Absolutely no care put into this dish whatsoever.
The partridge looked like something out of Eraserhead – it was very pink and came in a weird ‘broth’ or brown water. That was it. NO care what so ever once again. The cutlery was absolutely useless for this dish – a blunt butter knife. Really? The poor partridge was being wrestled all over the plate.
We were very excited to try the triple cooked chips… or wedges as they came. These were not triple cooked. They were simply just (and I mean JUST) cooked. Nothing came out as it was described on the menu.
I really could go on…
No one came over to check on anything until everyone had given up on the extremely bad food and cutlery was set down. We complained immediately to the waitress, who was then joined by the manager. His attitude was appalling – hands in his pocket (then folded), not bothered, didn't offer an apology or a coffee, drink, nothing. Was not concerned at all. The smirk on his face really topped it off and we asked for the bill.
Instead of bringing it over himself, and apologising etc, he gave it directly to our waitress as he snuck downstairs to inform the rest of the staff about our table. Leaving the restaurant was again incredibly awkward, having every waiter, waitress, bar man, ‘wine expect’ and so on look at us in disgust.
I strongly advice people NOT to dine here. The restaurant it's self is beautiful but unfortunately let down by bad food and a very unprofessional and inexperienced manager.
No thank you.
