Always a pleasure to visit Medlar, and I felt it important to write again as my first review gave no detail at all. Stunning wine list, attentive and professional service, and superb delivery. Yes, the atmosphere is a little staid, but the food and staff outdo themselves.
We had scallops tatare with a black bean soy and sesame seed sauce, and a oyster beignet (you've gotta love an oyster beignet). The warmth of the olives against the chilled tatare was the perfect contrast. We also shared a boudin blanc of Partidge which my companion felt bland, but I thought delicate and enhanced by the pumpkin purée and mushrooms with a deliciously light but gamey jus. The other starter (we were hungry) was their signature crab ravioli with samphire, brown shrimps, leek fondue and bisque sauce – sound mouthwatering? it is.
Mains were the monk fish (astonishingly good according to my hard to please friend) and a loin and faggot of red deer. The venison loin was tender and pink, and the faggot full of herbs and superb.
The 500cl carafe of Puligny Montrachet at 75% of bottle price the perfect opener to our attack on a magnificent bottle of Chambolle Musigny from Hudelot Noellat. You can order 500cl of any bottle on the list at 75% of bottle price if you feel you're not going to quite make it – it was a Monday and we were a bottle down before arrival, so temperance got the better of us.
All hail to Medlar, the friend of discerning tummies everywhere.
