I had been wanting to go to Medlar for a long time. Friends have been and told me how excellent it is and I finally got there last night for dinner with an old friend who hadn't been there either. It was a warm evening and we went for a table outside (there are 4). We were served by an extremely friendly girl as soon as we arrived and that set the tone for a really faultless evening. There are lots of interesting dishes on the menu, though despite this we both chose the same as each other, starting with the Sea Bream carpaccio with crisp tempura prawn – all beautifully garnished and absolutely delicious. I would certainly have it again. Next came the Under Blade fillet, succulent and perfectly cooked with a (very slightly too thick) sauce and chunky triple cooked chips. Pudding was a very nicely presented Creme chiboust (a kind of ice cream) with strawberries and crunchy honeycomb. All beautifully light with subtle clean flavour.
Why the ‘hog’ in the title – sitting outside, our conversation was drowned on several occasions by the roar of Harley Davidsons (and a handful of Maseratis) enjoying a midweek pose up and down the King's Road…
I will definitely go back.
