I know this place now has an increasing reputation for being tired and dated but you know what you're going to get. My reason for going was a celebratory business lunch and when the host said Langan's I gave what must be most people's first response “Langans's…I haven't been there for years..!” I can't deny there is a distinctly eighties feel through the whole experience – I felt like we should be talking about current affairs issues like the Falklands War.
Started with a G&T (well come on, we're in the 80's remember) in the bar linked to the restaurant – service attentive despite it being full. Menu is dated, classics like the prawn cocktail still hold a place in the starters and chicken in a wine sauce(!!) in the mains. I went with smoked haddock and poached egg starter and a medium rare sirloin for main course. To be fair, both were cooked just perfectly and could not be faulted. The only nod to the 21st century was the annoying feature of the steak arriving on a flat wooden board rather than a plate – how do you keep steak, chips and bearnaise sauce on a chopping board- you don't and so you have three separate pots going on through the entire meal like some sort of food apartheid system (very eighties…!).
There is nothing inventive or creative going on in this place but quite frankly why try and be something you're not and end up getting it wrong. If you want inventive there are other places you should be going, but if you want a bit of classic, traditional and, like myself, you “fear change”…then step right in.
