Having wanted to try this popular restaurant since they were awarded “Restaurant of the Year” in 2010, we were excited to discover for ourselves what the fuss was all about… and our experience did not disappoint!
Koh Thai Tapas offer exquisite Thai cuisine in a modern, stylish venue, with a European twist of a Tapas service style. Upon arrival, we were met by a very friendly hostess who led us through the ornately designed dining room, which is lavished with rich, deep shades of red and orange, and gorgeous hand-painted murals adorning the walls. The dark yet inviting wooden furniture feels authentic but modern.
One thing that struck us as we were seated was how joyful the staff were. The service all night was fast and friendly, with a professional yet relaxed service style. The young ladies who served us seemed only too happy to make suggestions and help us try they best that Koh has to offer. Using the knowledge of the staff, we opted for a unique option, by which you specify your budget for the evening, and what your likes and dislikes are, and they bring you a wide selection of Thai Tapas to try – this is almost a must on the first visit to Koh (you will be back!), as it gave us so many different tastes to sample.
Our waitresses brought us the most delectable chicken satay skewers, dripping in peanut heaven, and their crispy squid, fried in a super-light batter and served with a hot and sweet dipping sauce. Alongside these we had the quintessential Thai fishcakes, and a taste of their 24-hour ribs, which are marinated over 24 hours in the most magnificent sauce I can ever remember sampling.
The big, bold flavours kept coming, with a well-seasoned prawn Pad Thai, a punchy Penang curry, and my highlight of the night – a Massamann Lamb curry, made with new potatoes, onion, peanuts and slow cooked pieces of lamb leg in a wonderfully flavoured Massamann sauce. Mouth watering!
To wash down our meal throughout the evening, we enjoyed a few different glasses of wine from their well stocked and somewhat different bar, including a majestic Terre Forti Sangiovese Rubicone from Italy, which went sublimely well with the lamb. After our meal, we were able to take our wine and coffees over in their lounge area, and enjoy some of the live soulful music by a talented local singer named Katie Francesca – a perfect end to the evening!
As the creators of Thai Tapas in the UK, Koh have really brought a unique and exciting concept to Bournemouth, with plans to open new sites across the country. Koh has merged the bright and funky, with the cool, urban and retro. They have combined the dark woods and stunning exposed brickwork with sumptuous deep oranges, modern murals, and traditional Thai Sculptures… This coupled with the spectacular food and slick service produces a result of a venue that is oozing with character, personality and soul.
