I finally managed to book a table for 3 for Saturday lunchtime via the Square meal website. The restaurant appears to be constantly fully booked. The restaurant's website booking system is temperamental to say the least, whenever I tried to book by phone I have been greeted with a dry ‘Sorry fully booked!’ . When we got there at 2pm for a 2.30pm booking, the restaurant was more than half empty. Despite the fact that we could see empty tables by the dozen, we were made to wait 15 mins at the bar before being offered a table.
We went for three of their signature starters, chilled razor clams, scallops and pork belly, all of which were rather disappointing. The quality of the seafood was poor, the scallops were tasteless, the razor clams were rubbery and straight out of the fridge (hence ‘chilled’…), nowhere near the level of seafood you find in Hong Kong.
We then went for the Peking duck two course dish. The first course was excellent but the second was nothing special. Finally we had the soft shell crab red lantern, very spicy but also very oily.
My husband asked for a taster glass of red wine (he is allergic to it but really like the taste), the waitress panicked as she didn't know how to handle the request so my husband suggested that he didn't mind paying for it. Bottom line we were charged the full £9.5 for literally a drop of red wine…not a massive problem but I somehow feel the drop of red wine could have been complimentary within a £170 bill for two people. Needless to say we will not be going back.
